Those last three haven't been as highly ranked, so they're not on the immediate try list, but didn't want to forget about them entirely either. Also I think it's really confusing that there is a lark burger and a park burger.

Fantasy Football: 12-team manual schedule

For three years, I've used ESPN to run our fantasy league. I was drawn to it by the custom scoring, but what I love most is that it keeps our settings every year, so it's a breeze to set up.

The only drawbacks are that there's no way to make new random divisions...and the biggest drawback is that once you set the divisions, there's no way for it to auto generate a good schedule.

I'm sort of a Prickly Pete when it comes to schedules. I want to have two divisional games and the play the rest of the teams once. I don't think that's too much to ask.

Anyways, for the third year in a row, I had to get it out multiple sheets of paper and figure out how to set up the schedule. The divisional games are easy, it's weeks 4 through 11 that are tricky. Obviously, you can't just have the east play the central in week 4, because then the west doesn't have anyone to play.

And for some reason, I've never saved what the schedule should look like, until now. This is going to save me a huge headache next year.

2010 census (in 2011): favorite teams

Back in June 07, I took stock of my favorite teams.

The gist was that it was far and away the Chiefs, then Illini basketball and football close together and then I didn't really have teams beyond that.

Here's where I stand now:

Currently I would represent them graphically as:

Chiefs
-
-
Illini Hoops
Illini Football
-
-
Avalanche
Nuggets
-
Rockies
Rapids
Arsenal

best moon

Last night I was driving to the grocery store at 9pm Mountain. Driving east to the store, I saw the biggest, best moon I'd ever seen. It was giant--three times its usual size. It was bright yellow. And it was hanging low just over the horizon, possibly explaining the size.

When I left the store at 9:45 the moon was higher, smaller and a simple white. In other words, a normal full moon. The moment was gone.

I didn't take a picture. But thanks to the magic of flickr, here's a picture of the August 2011 full moon.

this is confusing

There is a Dartmouth College in the northeast and there's a Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
Dartmouth College is in Hanover, New Hampshire.

There is a Marquette University in the northern midwest and there's a Marquette, Michigan.
Marquette University is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I'm sure there are plenty of others. Use your imagination.

first Denver dish

I was all set to try the East Colfax (a green chile base pizza) from the Denver Pizza Co. I called them up and tried to order last night and they said they were out of green chile.

So I audibled.

I went to Safeway and picked up a frozen tub of Mark Schlereth's Stinkin' Good Green Chile.

(not my picture)

They have pork, chicken and vegetarian. I opted for the classic pork in the HOT variety. It took forever to cook from frozen. But eventually it was ready.

Assuming you don't know, green chile is not just a green salsa. It is really a sauce, a thick sauce that could border on looking like a stew, that is meant to be served hot, usually smothering a burrito. To my novice mind, the fact that you heat it up and ladle it on to cover dishes makes it different than a salsa.

Since my pizza fell through, I opted to make a Green Chile Smothered Cheeseburger.

One quarter-pound beef patty, one sliced of cheddar, and a generous coating of hot green chile with big chunks of pork and veggies. I didn't take any pictures, but it wasn't that much to look at. Tasted darn good though.

Chiefs on TV

I'm trying to get psyched up for the NFL after not thinking about it for six months. Now that I'm in Denver, I was curious if I was going to get more Chiefs games on TV. Here's the 2010 breakdown for Chiefs games, whether or not they were aired in these markets.

Week 1: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Week 2: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 3: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Week 4: bye

Week 5: Denver: N, Chicago: Y

Week 6: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 7: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 8: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 9: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Week 10: Denver: Y, Chicago: Y

Week 11: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 12: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 13: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Week 14: Denver: N, Chicago: N

Week 15: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Week 16: Denver: N, Chicago: N
Week 17: Denver: Y, Chicago: N

Denver: 7 of 16 Chiefs games
Chicago: 2 of 16 Chiefs games

That's a pretty good improvement.

Looking forward to 2011

They have 2 games on Monday Night Football
The Chiefs play the Broncos twice
And they have a Sunday Night NBC game, though it is in the flex window so it's not guaranteed

But that's 5 games right off the bat. And I just took a quick look at the Broncos schedule. They play virtually all their games at 2:15 (mountain time) and the Chiefs play all their games at Noon (central time). So I would expect to get upwards of 10 Chiefs games on tv this year. The increase from 2010 would come from the primetime games.
