Say a NBA team is down four. They attempt a 3-pointer, releasing the ball with .1 on the clock. After the buzzer sounds, the shooter is fouled on his follow through.. The 3-point shot misses.
I'm assuming they would still be awarded three free throws. But the clock would say zero and they would be down four. So there would be no chance to win.
Do you think the shooter would try hard to make those pointless free throws? Do you think anything like this has ever happened?
Done four they're taught not to foul because of the possibility of giving up a four point play, so the odds of this happening are rare. I'm going to guess that they'd still try to make the free throws for the stats. You never know if it'll help get the person a double-double or a 20 point game or just a higher point per game average.
