it's real

It's almost hard to believe that after all this time and effort, I've actually written a novel. And people are about to read it. A year ago I was halfway through the rough draft, and up until August I was still planning on releasing it on 11.22.08. And now it's finished.

I hope people like it.

09 Draft: What ifs

This is a time capsule post. It was interesting to look at last year's picks and see who was taken around who. I mentioned interests in John David Booty, Brian Brohm, and Andre Woodson and so far the NFL hasn't heard their names. But we'll see.

So here's who the Chiefs could have picked, and what I would have done, for posterity.

Round 1: Tyson Jackson - DE
What If: Aaron Curry, Andre Smith, B.J. Raji, Brian Orakpro, Michael Crabtree
Me as GM: I probably would have gone Curry but I don't fault the Chiefs for picking a player that fits better.

Round 2: (no pick, but could have traded up)
What If: James Laurinaitis, Rey Maualuga
Me as GM: I wouldn't have traded up, but I would have jumped at either one if the Chiefs had a 2nd round pick. Still prefer Cassel/Vrabel to one of these guys though.

Round 3: Alex Magee - DT
What If: Jarron Gilbert, Deon Butler, Juaquin Iglesias
Me as GM: I like the report on Gilbert better than Magee. But after looking at the talent or lack there of in round 3, perhaps it would have been better to move up to the 2nd round to get a LB.

Okay so I just looked at the rest of players in the draft and I don't know any thing about any of them. So I guess I would have tried to get Curry and Maualuga and been done with it. The only future comparisons will be Curry vs Jackson and Magee vs Gilbert.

Chiefs 2009 Draft

I wouldn't be much of a Chiefs blogger if I didn't take the time to record my thoughts on the Chiefs 2009 Draft. If you go back and last year's draft post, it feels like it was written a century ago. I was still high on Croyle. Not even Thigpen, but Croyle.

Fast forward to 2009 and this is the first draft of the Pioli (aka Pioli-Haley) Era. We have Dorsey from last year and have Aaron Curry on the board. These are the best players available in the draft (according to Kiper) and they could be part of our front seven. But Pioli wants a 3-4. So we don't take Curry. And apparently Dorsey is a good DT on a 4-3 but can't play NT or DE on a 3-4.

Round 1: 3rd overall
Tyson Jackson - DE

So we pass on Curry and take a DE. D-Line 1/3 solved! I had this feeling that we weren't going to draft Curry if he wouldn't fit in our system. I'm not convinced this is a great pick but I have to trust that Pioli knows what he's doing.

Round 2 (traded to NE for Cassel & Vrabel)

When you look at it this way, the trade looks even better. I'd rather have Cassel or Cutler than Stafford and Sanchez. And the Chiefs got their QB in the second round and will pay a lot, but not #1 money.

Round 3: 67th overall
Alex Magee - DT/DE

This pick is a head scratcher. At least from my naive, rudimentary analysis that you want 3 solid d-line starters in a 3-4. But I'm starting to come around to that's not how it works. Jackson might be one DE. But they might be rotating Dorsey, Magee, Tyler and any of our other scrubs at the other 2 D-Line spots. It's starting to seem like Dorsey doesn't have a place here and that he could be traded. I can't help but remember that he was the best player in 2008! If they can't get him to work something's screwed up.

My gut says this pick doesn't pan out.

Round 4: 102th overall
Donald Washington - CB

Another pick I don't like. Our secondary's not terrible and it's not like this guy was the far and away best prospect. We could have used a LB, O-LINE, or WR. We actually got two good cornerbacks in last year's draft. I suppose a 3rd good one doesn't hurt, but it just seems strange.

Round 5: 139th overall
Colin Brown - OL

We could use an upgrade at RT, but is this it? Can he beat out McIntosh and become a starter? Last year we drafted Barry Richardson for RT at 170th overall, he didn't see any action and now we're drafting Brown. Is this a repeat and a wasted pick? Feels like it.

Round 6: 175th overall
Quinten Lawrence - WR

Ah, a 6-foot receiver from a small school. Sounds like he might be our return man since they cut last year's 182nd pick Kevin Robinson. I got excited last year for Robinson because I assumed if they drafted a kick returner he would be able to return kicks. Well a year later Robinson's not on the team and Lawrence is drafted. Feels like another wasted pick.

Round 7: 212th overall
Javarris Williams - RB

Huh? I know it's seventh round, but still. Whatever.

Round 7: 237th overall
Jake O'Connell - TE

We get rid of Tony Gonzalez and we get Jake O'Connell. I would say "good luck even making the team" but Pioli traded into this slot to get him, so he must have really wanted him.

Round 7: 256th overall
Mr. Irrelevant - K

Succop won't make the team, but I suppose a little kicking competition for Barth isn't bad. Last year we cut Barth before the season and then added him later. So kickers come and go. Maybe he's the next Vinatieri.

SUMMARY

I feel like Tyson Jackson should be a solid DE for a long time, but I'm not sure how Dorsey fits into the mix. None of the rest of the picks are filling me with confidence. But hey I don't know anything.

LAST YEAR'S ANALYSIS

I didn't make too many predictions last year. Mostly I said I hope they pan out and I wanted Early Doucet.

I was critical of Charles but now I like the pick. For some reason I said I really liked the pick of Brandon Carr - CB in the 5th round. He turned about to be surprisingly good. Not sure why I liked it but it worked out.

I also thought Kevin Robinson would be the last time we thought about a kick returner for 5 years, so again, I don't know anything.

bust alert!

And the first pick is off the board. And it's a huge mistake. Stafford will not pan out for the Lions. That isn't to say that he couldn't succeed in the right system (like the Patriots) but there's no way that he gets a second contract with the Lions. Even wankers across the Atlantic know that the Lions are used to wilting under draft-day pressure.

Instead of buying a Stafford jersey, Lions should just buy this one: (it will be relevant a lot longer).

it's never too early

Inspired by the Draft, I've already started setting up a Fantasy Football league for 2009. Yes, I know it's April. But maybe we should hold our drafts earlier if I want to get my players into training camp!

I tried an ESPN league a long time ago but didn't like their scoring setup. 4 points for passing tds, negative points for defenses, etc. But now they have free custom leagues where you can control everything.

So here's the settings I'm planning on. Let me know what you think.

I started with the assumption that we will get people to fill this out without using strangers, so I went 10 teams instead of 12 to make that easier. I've got 9 roster spots (1 qb, 2 rb, 2 wr, 1 flex rb/wr, te, k, dst) I've got 7 bench spots plus an IR spot, so that's 16 rounds of drafting.

With 10 teams, it seems the fairest is to have 2 5-team divisions. Division winners get in playoffs plus 2 wild-card spots. So 4 teams out of 10 make playoffs.

The regular season will last 13 weeks. You play your four division rivals twice, and the five teams in the other division once. Wild card playoffs in week 14, and Super Bowl in week 15.

Even though it finishes earlier, I like that week 16-17 irregularities for playoff teams won't come into play.

(Also, in the playoffs, I've set the matchup tiebreaker to be "home team wins", to provide a minimal Home Field Advantage.)

As for scoring, here are the settings I've created. Some new highlights:
  • half point per reception (making the flex position and TE position more interesting)
  • bonuses for long touchdowns and milestone days (making studs more valuable)
  • forty yard field goals are worth 4
  • defensive points are weighted (making studly dst's more valuable)

The only question left is do we want to do a live draft, or a live auction? (rules for auction)

The auction has me intrigued but I also don't want to overwhelm people with a new system. Thoughts?

what does waterboarding look like?

Two videos of people agreeing to be waterboarded. Very interesting to see the confidence going in and the results. And I have to believe the feelings are different when there are no cameras around, you don't have code words, and you have no reason to think they will stop.

Vanity Fair Waterboarding Video

Huffington Post Waterboarding Video

I think if George W. Bush had said "In cases where we believe national security is at stake, we practice interrogation techniques that are classified as torture" I think most people would probably admit, "yeah, waterboarding is torture." But because we've declared the US doesn't torture, now we're trying to fit the facts to our ideals.

And this isn't a Republican-Democrat partisan issue. This is George W. Bush administration issue.

Japanese were tried and hanged for torturing American prisoners during World War II with techniques that included waterboarding.

"There should be little doubt from American history that we consider that as torture otherwise we wouldn't have tried and convicted Japanese for doing that same thing to Americans...I would also hope that he would not want to be associated with a technique which was invented in the Spanish Inquisition, was used by Pol Pot in one of the great eras of genocide in history and is being used on Burmese monks as we speak. America is a better nation than that." - John McCain, November 2007

madden pr is a bunch of lies

Weeks ago EA Sports announced the 9 finalists for the Madden 10 Cover. They wanted people to watch videos and read about the finalists and they promoted this with the tagline: There Can Only Be One, as seen in these posters:

And here's the cached version of the reveal page.

Alright, it's April 24. So who is The One?

Seriously? A fine choice. But don't lead up to a two-athlete cover by telling us There Can Only Be One. Clearly, there can be two! Now you look like a bunch of liars who don't know their ass from a playaction pass.

goodbye to gonzo

After 12 seasons with the Chiefs, Tony Gonzalez is now an Atlanta Falcon. It sort of stings just to see it in print.

Tony was never my favorite Chief. I guess just because he was never the flashiest guy. Between Derrick Thomaas, Priest Holmes, Dante Hall, Larry Johnson, Dwayne Bowe there was always someone who was making the highlight reel ahead of him. But what was remarkable was how consistent he was. Every game he was good for at least 4 catches and 60 yards and was clutch when it mattered.

What stood out to me when I was watching old Chiefs' games, even as far back as the DT era in '99, was that there was Gonzalez--making plays over the middle, looking exactly the same as he does now. He's been so good for so long that you take for granted that you have a tight end that you can count on. He never dropped the ball (although he got more than his fair share of offensive interference calls) and was better than you expected of running after the catch.

He was drafted with the Chiefs' first pick in 1997 (13th overall) and has made it to the Pro Bowl 10 consecutive years and is still active (the record is 14 consecutive). 8 of those years he has recorded at least 900 receiving yards. As a tight end.

The biggest shame is that the Chiefs squandered his talent, never winning a playoff game with him in 12 years. As a rookie, Kansas City went 13-3 and was the top seed in the AFC but lost to the eventual champion Broncos in the divisional round. Gonzo had the only Chiefs' touchdown in that 10-14 loss, but he wasn't a big factor in his rookie year.

The next real chance for Tony was in 2003 when the Chiefs went 13-3 and got a first round bye. KC hosted the Colts and the offense did their job: they scored 31 and never punted. Unfortunately, the Chiefs' defense couldn't force a punt either and Indy won 38-31.

In 2005, Kansas City had a good team despite an inconsistent defense. They went 10-6 but needed the Lions to beat the Steelers to get a Wild Card berth. Of course, the Lions laid down like dogs and the Steelers went 10-6, advanced over the Chiefs on a tiebreaker, and went on to win the Super Bowl.

In 2006, in Herm Edwards' first year, the Chiefs squeaked into the playoffs with a 9-7 record. They didn't belong and were no match for the Colts. Although it didn't help that Herm benched a hot Huard and went with Old Trent Green. So Gonzalez put in 12 years of dedicated service, and game away with a 0-3 record in the playoffs to show for it.

Oh yeah, and he saved a guy from choking last year. So that's nice.

As for his place in history, he's a lock for Canton. He's owns all the career records for a tight end. As for his trade value and what he has left in him, let's compare with Shannon Sharpe (which I just realized is a really girly name--it sounds like a gymnast). Shannon played 14 years and was productive until the end, recording 770 yards and 8 scores in his final year. Also, Sharpe had 8 Pro Bowls in 14 years--Tony has 10 in 12. So the Falcons should expect to get at least 2 productive years out of him. But let's face it, Kansas City's not making a Super Bowl run in the next two years. So if they can get a player that will help the team into the 2010's, so be it. But it's a shame that he won't finish his career as only a Kansas City Chief.

Here's the 2008 highlight reel of the best tight end to ever play the game.

draft 09 talk

Mark: Certainly, we'll be better than last year. Or at least we won't be worse.

After the Chiefs got the best post-draft grade last year, what do you seem them doing this year? What do you want to see happen?

For the Lions, I'm hoping we DON'T take Stafford with the #1 pick. Either trade down or take a lineman/linebacker. I don't want somebody at a skill position. At #1 you can't gamble and waste tons of money. Make the pick a sure-thing.

Dave: So everyone thinks the Chiefs are going to take Curry, which is fine with me because according to the experts, he's the #1 prospect. Just like we got Dorsey last year at 5 even though he was the top rated player. The only snag with Curry and Dorsey is that the Chiefs are moving to a 3-4 and people don't think those guys can be effective in a 3-4.

The Chiefs got their QB and have a decent backfield. And special teams are okay. The biggest problems are the defense, O-line and receivers beyond Bowe. Even thought it seems that receivers are more important these days (See Fitz in 08 and the record year Brady had with Moss/Welker in 07) I still think that's a position you address last.

So if they could get some good defensive guys and at least one solid O-line guy, I'd be happy.

As for the Lions, we saw how a 1-15 team improved when they went O-Line #1. So of Course I expect Detroit to draft Harrington, I mean Stafford.

Here are some cherry-picked stats I found:

College Stats: completion percentage, and ratio of TD:INT, sorted by ratio

Aaron Rodgers (63.8%) 3.30:1
Phillip Rivers (63.5%) 2.79:1
Peyton Manning (62.7%) 2.73:1
Kyle Orton (59.3%) 2.54:1
Jamarcus Russell (61.8%) 2.48:1
Ben Roethlisberger (65.5%) 2.47:1
Joey Harrington (54.7%) 2.38:1
Eli Manning (60.8%) 2.31:1
Vince Young (61.8%) 1.57:1
Matthew Stafford (57.1%) 1.55:1

Notice that completion percentage seems to be a pretty reliable indicator, based on this small sample. Manning, Big Ben, Rivers, Rodgers all with percentages around 63. Stafford looks like a bust. But think how great he'll look in that new fierce logo!

Mark:
Taking the best player available seems like the best thing to do when you suck. Maybe if I knew more about 3-4 vs. 4-3 defenses, I would understand how the best player in the draft might not fit a certain defense. It seems to me that if you're a great linebacker prospect, you'll be able to back lines in any kind of defense. Or am I an idiot?

In any case, I actually read TMQ for the first time in perhaps 2 years and he says that the #1 indicator of a QBs success in the pros is his number of college starts. In that case, Stafford is a much better pick than Sanchez, but I still don't want him. Take a LT or the linebacker.

It appears as though the Lions will have agreed with whoever they pick on a contract before the draft. I see this as a good sign that the Lions are trying and preparing for the draft.

Oh, and Culpepper has been impressing in off-season workouts. Like every year, I'm predicting 9-7 with a visit to the playoffs.

90's tv

best meals

So last August we went to Hugo's Frog Bar and I added it to the list of best meals ever. Well after going to Italy, I've got one to add and I think that Hugo's just got bumped. It didn't stand the test of time.

Although we did have the panini of a lifetime there, it's hard to consider that a meal in the sense of this list. The one I'm adding was from Florence, when we ate at Lo Scudo just southwest of the Duomo. I ordered the 600 gram Bistecca Fiorentina and it was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. There was lemon and roasted red peppers and it was unbelievable. So good we had to go back.

So that makes 3 of the 4 best meals ever steak-focused. I don't even remember all that we ate at Le Village, there was meat and crepes and desserts and bread. Mmmmm.

The List
Le Village Buffet - Paris Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas -- January 2005

Fogo de Chao, Chicago -- April 2006
Capital Grille, Chicago -- November 2006 (porterhouse steak)
Lo Scudo, Florence -- March 2009 (bistecca fiorentina)

Me and Aaron Schock

Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL), 27, is the youngest member of Congress and represents the 18th District of Illinois.

At age 19 he was elected to the Peoria School Board. By age 23 he was unanimously selected to be Board President.

By the time he was in high school he was working a substantial number of hours per week at a gravel pit and invested nearly all of it. With these earnings he was able to purchase his first piece of real estate at age 18 and bought and sold investment properties.

He graduated from Bradley University in Peoria with a B.S. in Finance (a four year degree) in only two years.

Also he's referred to as "shockingly hot."

In 8th grade at Rolling Acres he was the Captain on the school's Mathcounts team. Mathcounts is basically an math competition for the best 7th and 8th graders. In the 1995-1996 competition, Aaron Schock lead the Rolling Acres Cougars into competition. However, he didn't register the best score for his team. That honor belonged to a plucky 7th grader: Dave Fymbo.

In 8th grade, I became the team Captain and received the individual honor of best score in the district. I won a scientific calculator. Of course, the rest of my teammates didn't pull their weight and our school didn't place in the top honors.

Speaking of that, in 6th grade I participated in a game show style competition called Scholar's Cup. It's only for 6th graders and I was the captain on our team. I received the individual honor of most questions answered correctly all season: best in the district. Again, our team finished in 4th place I believe despite my district leading performance.

Here's one question that is still stuck in my head.

What is the 2-letter postal abbreviation for Maryland?

The other team buzzed in first and I think they said MA.

That was incorrect and our team had 5 seconds to buzz in. I didn't know the answer so I waited for one of my teammates to buzz in. No one did. So instead of letting time run out, I buzzed in after 4 seconds and guessed MY. When they said the correct answer, I felt like I should have known it.

(Taking a sports analysis, you could argue that because my teammates were idiots they enabled me to rack up the stats. It's easy to imagine if you had a team of all-stars that it would be difficult for any individual to get a lot right. However, I was competing with another team to buzz in first. Plus, my teammates buzzed in a lot with wrong answers. For the record, in Mathcounts, the competition is in the form of individual tests, so your teammates can't affect your score.)

So I doubt Aaron Schock remembers that day 13 years ago when a 7th-grader beat his Mathcounts score, but maybe he does.

Football

I grew up playing soccer. I was decent enough when the teams were arranged by grades. But then around 8 or so, they changed the rules so teams were divided by age. Since I was always young for my grade, I was used to playing with bigger, older boys. Once I was playing against boys my age, suddenly I was the bigger, faster kid and I had a good season that year.

In 1994, I knew enough about the World Cup that I knew who Roberto Baggio was and that it was a big deal that his missed the last penalty, giving the Cup to Brazil.

But it was really the summer of 1998 that introduced me to top flight soccer. It was in France and it worked out great because the games were on in the morning. I would wake up and have nothing to do and could settle into a nice Netherlands-Mexico match. I appreciated the intensity, national pride, and the game for what it is.

Once it was over though, there really wasn't anything on TV or anyway for me to continue with soccer.

By 2002, I was home from my first year of college and was working a summer job and relaxing. Unfortunately, the Cup was played in South Korea that year, and this was pre-Tivo. So if I wanted to watch games I had to watch from 2-4 or 4-6 in the morning. I think I caught one U.S. game at 2 a.m. but it just didn't work out.

And then 2006 came around. The games were back on in the morning-midday and we were able to watch some over an extended lunch break. I remember watching the Czech Republic wax the U.S. The U.S had a chance to advance to the knockout stage by beating Ghana but couldn't do so. I also remember being in a bar on the weekend watching Argentina beat Mexico, which was relevant because there were a bunch of Mexico fans there as well. The final was a classic featuring the Zidane head-butt and again penalties to decide it all.

So in 2007, armed with the power of the internet and digital cable with a dedicated soccer channel, I learned about the Premiership and UEFA Champions League. I wrote about it here on 2.20.07. As you can see in that link, I was already partial to Arsenal.

I remembered Bill Simmons journey to picking a Premiership team in the summer of 06, and how we never heard from the Spurs from him again.

Here's how I came to like Arsenal best in the EPL:
  • They were a top-tier team that will usually be in the Champions League, but weren't the "Yankees" of the league: that would be Man U or Chelsea.
  • They are from London. A benefit in terms of representation and in the case of actually visiting or something.
  • They wear red. As Tiger Woods, the BBC, and the KC Chiefs know, red is a power color. Also it has the history of being the working man's color compared to the blue blooded Chelsea. Combined with the fact that Chelsea is the other top team in London, wears blue, and us run by a Russian mobster, Chelsea is a natural rival.
  • The team is nicknamed the Gunners, the fans the Gooners, and they play a fast paced game.
So they're my favorite English team. As for Italy, I always disliked Milan. I actually preferred the city of Florence to Roma, but when I was there I fell in love with the colors of Roma. Plus, they were actually in Champions League, so I bought a 10euro Roma jersey and adopted them as my Italian team. (I also bought a cheap replica Arsenal jersey in London on the same trip).

Ironically enough, our last night in Italy featured a Champions League match between Roma and Arsenal. It wasn't on our tv in Venice, but Arsenal won on penalties, so at least it was as close as could be.

Yesterday I DVR'd the second leg of the Arsenal-Villareal quarterfinal matchup. The first leg in Spain was a 1-1 draw. Interestingly, the tiebreaker of the aggregate score is away goals, which makes for some strategic choices. For example, since Arsenal scored 1 away goal in the first leg, a 0-0 draw at home would put them through, but a 2-2 draw would send them packing.

It was relevant because at 0-0, Villareal knew they were behind and had to score. And yet after Arsenal scored first, Villareal still only needed 1 goal to tie the aggregate.

Anyways, the first goal of the night was perhaps the prettiest goal I've ever seen:

The second goal was pretty as well, as Adebayor only used the outside of his foot. Arsenal advances to play Man U in the semifinals. Chelsea and Barcelona round out the bracket.

I don't really care about the Spanish La Liga, but if I had to pick one, I like Barcelona because of the city, the colors, their Unicef deal, and they used to have Ronaldinho.

So if I had my way, I'd of course have Arsenal avenge their 2006 Champions League Final loss to Barcelona, and send both Man U and Chelsea home in the semis.

Speaking of pretty goals, here's Arsenal's only goal in the first leg against Villareal:

So I'm all in on the Champions League, and in 2008 enjoyed the Euro Cup as a treat in between World Cups. I haven't yet gotten fully immersed into the EPL as a season-long activity, mostly because it's hard to follow all the games.

But I think that's enough: every two years there's a good international tournament, and every year there's a tournament for the best clubs in Europe. Sounds good to me.

2008 Flexed

As I just examined the primetime NFL schedule, I discounted the Sunday night games after week 11, because I just assumed that with flex scheduling, those games aren't likely to take place. But let's review what happened last year:

Week 11
Scheduled: (5-4) Cowboys at (6-3) Redskins: 14-10
Flexed: as scheduled

Week 12
Scheduled: (6-4) Colts at (4-6) Chargers: 23-20
Flexed: as scheduled

Week 13
Scheduled: (6-5) Bears at (6-5) Vikings: 14-34
Flexed: as scheduled

Week 14
Scheduled: (7-5) Patriots at (2-10) Seahawks: 24-21
Flexed: (7-5) Redskins at (8-4) Ravens: 10-24

Week 15
Scheduled: (11-2) Giants at (8-5) Cowboys: 8-20
Flexed: as scheduled

Week 16
Scheduled: (6-8) Chargers at (9-5) Bucs: 41-24
Flexed: (11-3) Panthers at (11-3) Giants: 34-28 OT

Week 17
Scheduled: tbd
Flexed: (8-7) Broncos at (7-8) Chargers: 21-52

There were 6 scheduled SNF games, and only 2 of them used flex scheduling. The last game of the year was left open on purpose to put in a playoff-relevant game. I was surprised that 4 out of 6 SNF games were played as scheduled. But I guess it worked out for them.

2009 NFL Primetime Sked

Just like last year, I'm taking a look at how many times teams are featured in the National Primetime games, including Monday Night, Sunday Night, Thanksgiving, Opening Night, but not including the NFL Network games or flex-Sunday games because they are not national/set in stone. I've also added in parenthesis the change from last year.

Cowboys 5 (+2)

Colts 4 (+1)
Packers 4 (0)

Bears 3 (0)
Cardinals 3 (+2)
Chargers 3 (+1)
Giants 3 (0)
Patriots 3 (0)
Redskins 3 (+1)
Steelers 3 (-1)
Titans 3 (+1)

Broncos 2 (0)
Dolphins 2 (+2)
Eagles 2 (-2)
Falcons 2 (+2)
Raiders 2 (+1)
Ravens 2 (+1)
Saints 2 (0)
Vikings 2 (0)

49ers 1 (0)
Bills 1 (0)
Browns 1 (-3)
Jets 1 (0)
Lions 1 (0)
Panthers 1 (0)
Texans 1 (0)

Bengals 0 (0)
Bucs 0 (-2)
Chiefs 0 (0)
Jaguars 0 (-2)
Rams 0 (0)
Seahawks 0 (-2)

Steelers win the Super Bowl and lose a primetime game. The Browns were the biggest loser, while the Cowboys, Dolphins, and Falcons all gained 2 more primetime spots compared to last year. For the Bengals, Chiefs, and Rams it's "maybe next year, again."

So now that I have three years of data, I can look at larger samples. So before I add up the most popular primetime teams, I came up with the teams that, if I were the schedule maker, I would have picked the most based on star power and strength of team: Colts, Pats, Steelers, Cowboys, Giants, and Chargers. So let's see who actually got the most:

Primetime Games 2007-2009

Cowboys 13

Packers 11

Colts 10
Steelers 10

Bears 9
Eagles 9
Giants 9
Patriots 9

Broncos 8
Chargers 8
Saints 8

Titans 7

Ravens 6
Redskins 6

Browns 5
Cardinals 5
Vikings 5

49ers 4
Falcons 4
Seahawks 4

Bills 3
Dolphins 3

I'm surprised the Bears have gotten more love than LT and the Chargers, but the top of the heap is about what I expected. I can't complain about the Chiefs schedule this year since they went 2-14, but I don't think it's too much to ask for 1 primetime game for every team once a year. Or for the Chiefs and Rams, once every three years.

HOW TO: make easy easter ham

I bought a 4-pound boneless pre-cooked ham, a small bag of light brown sugar, and a can of pineapple slices. In 20 minutes I had a Easter ham dinner that was worthy of someone cooking in the kitchen all day.

1. Preheat the oven to 400. Pour the juice from the pineapple slices into a saucepan, throw in a handful of brown sugar, and stir it up on medium until it's bubbling.

2. Slice your ham into your desired thickness and place a couple in your Pyrex casserole dish.

3. Pour your brown sugar-pineapple syrup into the ham dish. I cut my ham to about a centimeter thick and the syrup almost came up the top. Top each ham with a slice of pineapple. I also added a little bit of pure brown sugar in the pineapple hole.

Since it's precooked you just need to heat it up. I left it in my 400 degree oven for about 18 minutes. It came out perfectly, sweet and savory.

Here's how the pan looked after I ate my first piece.

fans don't know anything

This screen capture was taken from a game played in January of 2004.

Weeks later, the Eagles would lose in the NFC Championship. The following year they would lose in the Super Bowl. So that's not a stretch to say that Eagles were well positioned with Reid.

But the only one to win a Super Bowl since this poll was the NY Giants with Coughlin. And Parcells and Gibbs aren't even coaching those teams anymore.

If only I could go back in time to 2004 and vote in this NFL on AOL fan poll!

i'm one of these blurs

The day was Sunday, October 11, 1992. I was 8 years old. I was attending my 2nd Chiefs game. (My first was November 4, 1990, a 9-7 victory over the L.A. Raiders when I was 6. We were in the upper deck.)

My mom, a nurse, volunteered to take a group of diabetic kids to see the Chiefs host the Eagles. The only reason she did was so that she could get a ticket for me too. (I'm not actually sure what illnesses they had, I just remember someone testing their blood sugar inside Arrowhead).

Anyways, the result was we had front row endzone seats. The reason I remember this so vividly, is that at one endzone there was a band (the only live band at NFL games) called the TD Pack Band. Our seats were right behind the band and I remember that I was trying to make noise and I started banging my hands on the metal sign (pictured below). The band told me to cut it out. I was just an 8-year old trying to make noise and go nuts at a Chiefs game. Whatever.

Last night I discovered this amazing library of Chiefs games online. They didn't have the '90 Raiders game but they did have the Eagles game. So I went through and tried to find any shots where they show the endzone with the band. I can't quite make out which one I am. (Apparently, there was something before HighDef called SuperTerribleDef.)

But this picture was taken after the Eagles kicked a field goal. So I don't think I'm the kid in the right circle. In the left circle, there appears to be a kid in a white t-shirt with his face in his hands, pouting. I'm guessing that's me.

That's the best shot I could get as the shadows make it hard to see anything.

The Chiefs won 24-17, making them 2-0 in games I attended. Who knows how crucial that was in embedding fandom?

This game featured Randall Cunningham, Reggie White, Hershel Walker, Mike Golic, Christian Okoye, and the Chiefs QB: Dave Krieg. At the time, I remember thinking it was a big deal to see Randall Cunningham.

Bill Simmons: Bracket Post-mortem

I couldn't resist.

On the 3/18 B.S. Report, The Sports Guy and his friend Joe House made a bracket. This was their conversation beforehand.

Joe: "The first goal has to be to beat Obama."
Bill: "We don't just want to beat Obama. We want to beat him to the point that Secret Service has to send us threatening emails, saying don't ever do that again."
Joe: "If you're going to submit your resume to be Sports Czar, you gotta kick his butt. One that makes this a little easy--dude went chalk. He picked like two upsets in the whole tournament."
...
Bill: "I agree with you. I thought that was kind of a wuss move. I want my president to roll the dice with some chances."

So how did that turn out?
