I've always thought the breakdown of car companies and who owns what brands was confusing. I guess part of it, was that it seemed like Chevy and Ford were major brands. And then I would hear about GM. But then what's GMC?
And most people know that Toyota owns Lexus, but does everyone know that Honda owns Acura?
One thing that stands out from my limited research, is that GM is the only name of a group that is not also a specific brand.
Also, Volvo has always felt very European. I had no idea that it's been owned by Ford for 11 years, and soon to be Chinese-owned.
A incomplete list of some auto groups:
GM
Chevy
Buick
Pontiac
GMC
Saturn
Hummer
Cadillac
Ford
Ford
Lincoln
Mercury
Volvo
Toyota
Toyota
Lexus
Scion
Honda
Honda
Acura
Chrysler
Chrysler
Dodge
Jeep
Volkswagen Group
Volkswagen
Audi
Lamborghini
Bugatti
Bentley
BMW
BMW
Rolls-Royce
BMW's also got Mini. It's interesting that GM had so many more brands than the rest, and now has dropped Saturn, Hummer and Pontiac, bringing it inline with Ford.
ReplyDeleteAlso, there's Daimler, which used to have Chrysler, but now has Mercedes Benz and Smart.
