Avalanche Hit List

I have a goal. This goal could take 20+ years to realize.

The goal: Watch the Colorado Avalanche defeat all the other NHL teams, in person.

I've only seen them win one game so far, so I figure now's a good time to start. At least so I don't buy tickets to see a team I've already seen them beat.

If I go to two games a year, and they win one, I'll be done at 57. Let's see what happens.

1 down, 28 to go.

AVALANCHE HIT LIST
Anaheim Ducks - Avs 3, Ducks 2 (OT) - 3/12/12

  1. I like the idea, but teams change. After making the playoffs for 21 straight years, now they're saying the Red Wings might not make it. Gone are the days of Yzerman and Lidstrom. Datsyuk is still incredible to watch. But he's in his 30s. So you're going to see jerseys, but even those change. Oops, you missed your chance to see the Atlanta Thrashers and the Coyotes might move in the next five years.

But hockey is great, and it'll be cool to check teams off the list. Anything to get you going to more games is fine by me.

One of my favorite things is getting to the game early and watching them warm up on the ice. I used to go down to the first row. These guys are bigger and faster than they seem, and they do everything so effortlessly. Sometimes they even gave broken sticks to the kids standing next to the bench when they skated back to the locker room. Maybe Harrison or Buster will get a stick when they're older.

  2. To me it's not about seeing them beat every team that's ever existed, but to one day wake up look at the NHL standings and say I've seen the Avs beat every one of these teams.

So to your point, I'm not about to buy Avs-Coyotes tickets as that might be a waste.

And if I get the list accomplished in 2034 and then in 2038 the Kings move to Tijuana, well I've got a new team to beat again.

  3. That would be fun to look at the standings and know that you've seen the Avs beat every team, but I think it would be better to have seen every great player in a generation.

Go to a Penguins game to see Crosby, a Wings game to see Datsyuk, a Capitals game to see Ovechkin, etc. That way, when you're talking to Harrison about hockey or when somebody retires or makes the Hall of Fame, you'll know that you saw him play.

Maybe you can combine that with seeing the Avs beat everybody.

  4. Well, Burnsy and I saw Crosby play in Chicago.

Last year I saw Iginla (in a loss) and Selanne in a win.

  5. That's good. You can check those players off an imaginary list.

Aside from getting to the game early for the skate around, one thing I like to do is to pick a player during a shift and just follow him around the ice.

I'm just glad hockey is back.
