Once More Into The Breach

So Republicans are finally jumping off the Trump bandwagon. A little late, eh? But they see the writing on the wall and want to be on the right side of history.

So Condoleezza Rice cracks and says Trump should withdraw. But look at the top comments.

This got me thinking. The last time I talked about politics, I went through the Republican Party's entire platform and outlined how I disagreed with everything. But I didn't like the resulting conclusion, that I'm basically tied to one party. And the above comments is the reason why.

These people, and there are many, many of them, are so loyal to their party and this Trump movement that they would support and rationalize ANYTHING. There is no Trump scandal on earth that could make his supporters question their position.

And look, I sort of get it. With Supreme Court seats on the line, and the amount of power that the White House can hold, it would take a lot for me to vote for a party where I disagree with all their key issues. But if the roles were reversed, and Trump was a Democrat and Pence was the Republican...there is absolutely no way I would vote for Trump. I might disagree with a Pence White House on just about everything. But Trump is everything from dangerous to embarrassing to hateful.

That said, as of this moment, the election is exactly one month away. There is no way for Trump to win. The next month is going to be ugly. There is one month for people to be on the right side of history. It will be curious to see how many people continue to support him. And how many states he actually wins. I know it doesn't matter. But it's just embarrassing. I mean, I know he'll get Alabama and West Virginia and Wyoming and similar states. But goddamn, to have that on your permanent record? Yikes.

Here's the really sad thing though. Even after Hillary wins, it's still kind of a lose-lose. Trump can launch his own news network and have Hannity on for four hours a night (or just show up on Hannity's show, same difference.) Meanwhile, Hillary is going to have to govern and it's going to be a fucking pain in the ass.

Republican Congress is going to do everything they can to make her look bad and not accomplish anything. 40% of the population already hates her. The Hillary version of "Thanks Obama" is going to be 10 times as hateful. It's going to stay ugly.

Gladwell had an interesting podcast about how when a door is open to outsiders, it is generally closed right away and doesn't work out that well for the first person through.

Seriously, Hillary is going to win and then six months in her approval rating will be under 50% no matter what she does. But hey, better than the alternative.

  1. I'm not a Republican and don't support Trump, but the thing that gets me is that no Democrat-voting people seem to care about Hillary's utter corruptness. The fact that there's a #NeverTrump movement among conservatives says a lot. Why isn't there a #NeverHillary movement among progressives?

  2. I don't see her as corrupt. I was happy she got the nomination and will be voting proudly for her, not as the lesser of two evils. I know there are issues and questions surrounding her, I haven't seen anything that gives me real pause.

I suppose it goes back to the issues. Since I already have a favorable view of her issues, even if their more center-left than I'd like, I'm more willing to continue to see her in a favorable light. We'd probably agree that Bernie seems less corrupt than Hillary, but I trust her more to be a better president.

  3. The email server and Clinton Foundation don't strike you as corrupt?
