Brett Favre could have left a hero, with his name at the top of the record books. He didn't. Instead he spent off-seasons getting handjobs from Peter King and sent dick pictures (from one attention whore to another.)
I wanted to go back, and dig to chronicle the Brett Favre retirement history. Luckily, he's done it so much that Time made a list and NBC Sports has a tracker.

2006 Season
Jan. 30, 2006
"If I had to pick right now and make a decision, I'd say I'm not coming back."
The headline for that ESPN story is "Favre says he's leaning toward retirement." Amazing that this started before the 2006 season.
The Packers go 8-8.
2007 Season
"If today's my last game, I want to remember it. It's tough. I'll miss these guys. I'll miss this game."
Favre had a great season, leading the Packers to a 13-3 record. He broke Marino's record for touchdown passes and passing yards. He also beat the Chiefs, giving him the landmark of defeating all 31 opposing teams. (He also set the career interception mark.)
The Packers hosted the NFC Championship game against the Giants. Favre threw an interception in overtime that set up the Giants game-winning field goal.
2008 Season
On March 4, 2008, Favre formally announced his retirement.
Apr. 4, 2008
"I have no idea where that came from, but it certainly didn't come from me. I'm happy about my decision and I haven't once said, 'I wonder if I made the wrong decision.' I know it's the right one. It's kind of funny. Even when I'm retired, they won't let me stay retired."
-- Favre, in an interview with SI.com regarding claims that his agent is making inquiries to other teams about a trade from the Packers
July 2, 2008
"It's all rumor."
-- Favre, regarding claims that his family wants him to keep playing
Aug. 7, 2008
Favre becomes a New York Jet.
The Jets start out 8-3, but miss the playoffs finishing 9-7. Favre threw 8 picks and 2 scores in those final five games. Somewhere in there, he sent some messages.
2009 Season
Feb. 12, 2009
Despite the Jets GM insisting he wants Favre to return, Favre retires again.
May 8, 2009
Favre has a meeting with the Vikings to "tell them he's staying retired." Now I'm not so sure that they didn't have a meeting and Favre explained how he wants to play for them, but that he won't join the team until after training camp.
July 28, 2009
Childress tells everyone that Favre is staying retired.
Aug. 18, 2009
Favre becomes a Minnesota Viking.
Favre beats the Packers, becoming the only QB to defeat all 32 current franchises. Favre leads the Vikings to a 12-4 record and they reached the NFC Championship Game. His interception in the final minutes of regulation set up overtime, where the Vikings would fall to the Saints.
2010 Season
Aug. 3, 2010
Favre tells Vikings he's retiring.
Aug. 17, 2010
Favre rejoins Vikings.
Vikings are 3-5 and an injured Favre should have benched if Childress wasn't so concerned with protecting Favre's streak.
November 11, 2010
Favre says he won't return for 2011.

So there you have it. This bullshit has been going on for five years, and it's still not done. Forgive me if I'm not fawning all over this latest rumor.
But seriously, all he had to do was not sign with the Jets in 2008. He already had the record for touchdown and passing yards. He took the Packers to the NFC Championship in a great season. He would have retired and had everything in Green Bay named after him forever.
Instead he goes to New York and sends pictures of his cock, then goes to rival Minnesota, throwing more game-ending interceptions, all the while continuing to be a drama queen. Talk about a legacy.

favre on the field
This was written Tuesday morning, following the Vikings loss. Before and after (or possibly near the end of the game) Klosterman tweeted:

It's perhaps more interesting if the last tweet came while the game was still in doubt. The Vikings had a chance to win, down 2 in the final minutes. And Favre had already thrown 3 touchdown passes. But, as has happened again and again, Favre throws a game-ending interception.
We saw this in the NFC Championship most recently, but you could look at just about any Favre game in the last 5 years and see the same thing.
(OF COURSE IT'S EASY TO SAY NOW, but) the best thing the Vikings could have done was let Favre play the whole game...up until the final two minute warning. Have him fake an injury (his arm was visibly hurt anyways) and say I'm not going to let Favre blow this game for us. If I'm going to blow this game, I want Tarvaris to do it.

choke
I was watching the women's curling Gold Medal Game live. Canada was up two in the final end and they had all the rocks in the house. This was over. They had time to give us all the backstory about Olympic trials, and how this particular Canadian team had a reputation of never being able to win the big game. And how great it was that they were finally going to win Olympic gold.
And the person who's been making all the clutch shots, the skip Cheryl Bernard was just two throws away from winning it all. And then she blew it. I mean she CHOKED like nothing I'd ever seen before.
Not only did she miss hitting the Sweden rock she was aiming for, but she knocked her own out, setting up Sweden for an incredibly easy final shot to score the two they needed.
I tried to think of a bigger choke.
All I could think of was Brett Favre in this year's NFC Championship game. But let's make this a football analogy to see how terrible this was.
First off, it's the Super Bowl. Canada is up 7. There's 35 seconds left and the play clock is on 5. Sweden is out of timeouts. Canada has the ball inside Sweden's 10. They don't need to score, just run the clock out. And they hand it off, and and FUMBLE. Sweden picks it up and is going the other way and Sweden is pushed out on the 1-inch line with 5 seconds to go in the game. All they have to do is do a sneak to send the game to overtime.
AND THEN
(For this analogy we have to imagine the NFL using the current college football overtime rules)
In overtime, Sweden scored a field goal on their possession. But Canada will get the ball back. They've got the hammer and on their final play, interception, game over.
Just the worst choke ever.
- - -
Also, I don't want Brett Favre or the Vikings to be off the hook here. When I see him all I think of is he how's a selfish prick and how he continually blows games. When you choke for a decade I can't remember anything else.
And the Vikings...who still want him to come back.
It's like you're entering an auto race with no pit stops. The race is 100 miles long. You're looking at a car that only has 97 miles worth of gas in it's tank. But it is pretty fast.
The other cars that you have aren't nearly as fast. But you don't know the size of their gas tank, and there might be ways to make them faster.
Or you could try and buy a new car, or even build one from scratch.
But no because the care you have is pretty fast, you want to stick with it, even though it doesn't have enough gas to cross the finish line. At least you'll be "in the race" for almost the whole way.

favre
And then we get to Brett Favre. Who had a meeting with the Vikings to say I'm staying retired. Then WHY THE FUCK DID YOU HAVE A MEETING? It makes no goddamn sense.
Someone on M&M joked that the reason Favre told the Vikings "no" was because he knew he would be sharing the news cycle with Manny and he wanted to wait until he would be the only story.
And seriously, the Vikings are better off without him. Every team in the NFL is. All of the experts who think the Vikings would win the Super Bowl with Favre are living in the 1990's.
No one will win a Super Bowl with Favre. It will only delay the development of an actual quarterback of the future.
- Hoagie Central - May 8, 2009
The biggest mistake is that this hurts the Vikings. Their Super Bowl hopes in the next couple years just took a nose dive. They need to find a quarterback solution that will help them throughout the prime of AD. This is going to waste a year or two and I don't think I'm being hyperbolic when I say this could waste Peterson's Super Bowl window. I know the Vikings can't win one with Favre, so this is just pushing back their timeline for possible success.- Hoagie Central - August 18, 2009

2007 NFC Championship
Brett Favre throws an interception in overtime that sets up the game winning field goal for the Giants. The Giants go on to win the Super Bowl over the favored Patriots, who almost went undefeated. That interception, his second of the day, was Brett Favre's last throw as a Green Bay Packer.
2009 NFC Championship
Brett Favre throws an interception in the 4th qtr that sets up the game winning field goal for the Saints. The Saints go on to win the Super Bowl over the favored Colts, who almost went undefeated. That interception, his second of the day, was Brett Favre's last throw as a Minnesota Viking.

Also, in his last game as a New York Jet, in a game they needed to win to make the playoffs, Favre threw three interceptions. Not counting his last play that included a lateral and a penalty on Favre for an illegal forward pass, Favre's last throw as a New York Jet was an interception.

So my preseason anti-Favre comments were mostly proven wrong. It's hard to tell the Vikings, who were a play here or there away from being in the Super Bowl, that they shouldn't have gone after Favre. He played great this year, and cut down on his interceptions. So again, I was mostly wrong about him.
Except that technically I was right. Favre did not help them win a Super Bowl this year. And instead of developing Tavaris Jackson or drafting a rookie and developing him or getting a free agent that will be here for their team's window, they've got a QB that could quit and try and come back in August.
The thing is this Vikings team is ready to win now. Their window is open, but it never stay there for long. So on the one hand I understand going with the guy that gives you the best shot now. But you have to consider this list:
Brady, E. Manning, P. Manning, Roethlisberger.
Those are the SB winning QB's for the last 6 years. "Your best shot" doesn't matter if it's not good enough.
For example, the Raiders could go with Russell at QB or they could bring in 46-year old Vinny Testaverde. Now Testaverde might be the Raiders best shot at winning the most games in 2010. But he's clearly incapable of leading them to a SB win. So it's not their best course of action. Either they should try and develop Russell or bring in someone who they could develop who could be good enough to win the big one.
My point is that just because Favre is an improvement, you have to believe that he can win a SB at 40 to bring him in. I didn't think he could. Minnesota did. And the reason I didn't was that he was prone to throwing interceptions and is vulnerable to late-season collapses.
This late-season collapse just took a biiiiiiiiiit longer than I expected.

Me from May 8th:
And from Arrowhead Pride on July 7th:
Let's see, training camp is over in two days, he got to jerk Peter King around for a couple months, might as well join the Vikings. And those tickets that the Vikings-Chiefs tix that they couldn't sell are now going for triple face value.

It absolutely infuriates me that my Mike & Mike in the Morning and my Fanhouse and my ESPN.com gets taken over by this bullshit. Don't cover his bullshit! I don't care if he discovers a cure for Swine Flu: I don't want to hear his name, unless it's Week 1 and he's actually playing.
