2025 NFL Preview

In August 2024, I predicted Chiefs over Eagles in LIX.
In August 2023, I predicted 49ers over Chiefs in LVIII.

Two years running I've picked both Super Bowl teams correctly! If you ignore the part where I got the winners wrong, it's very impressive!

In August 2022, I correctly predicted the Chiefs to win LVII, but incorrectly picked the Vikings as their opponent.
In August 2019, I correctly predicted the Chiefs to win LIV, but incorrectly picked the Saints as their opponent.

A Super Bowl prediction involves three elements: AFC team, NFC team, and the winner. Over the last 6 years, I've gotten 2 out of 3 elements correct four times. And really, who counts the covid years anyways?

- - -

After a 50-year gap between Super Bowl appearances, the Chiefs have appeared in (check notes...that can't be right...) five of the last six Super Bowls.

Since the start of the 2015 regular season, the Chiefs have the most Super Bowl Wins.

Since the start of the 2005 regular season, no team has more Super Bowl Wins.
(The Patriots also have three.)

Since the start of the 1987 regular season, the Chiefs are still tied for 2nd place in Super Bowl Wins.

- - -

Before just plowing ahead, I want to pause to look back and see how I did last year, see if there's anything to be learned.

AFC Division Finishes

I got 4/4 correct in the West, 2/4 in every other division. I nailed the bottom team in every division. Also the top team in every division except the Bills. The only misses last year was swapping Bills/Dolphins, Colts/Jaguars, Steelers/Bengals.

That seems really strong?

NFC Division Finishes

Less strong here, getting 2/4 in three divisions but only 1/4 in the NFC North. Again, I'm doing better by identifying the worst and best teams.

Last year of the 8 teams I picked to be last in their division, 6 times they were. I got 5 division winners correct. Still seems like enough to make money on.

As for the playoffs I only got 4/7 correct on both sides. Not great.

My best call last year was picking the 49ers to miss the playoffs.

Does that help me learn anything? Not really. It does seem to show that the more familiar I am with a division/conference, the better I do. Enough stalling, let's get to it.

- - -

AFC West

The Chiefs should have a better receiver room than last year...but are also coming off a Super Bowl loss. The one time Mahomes missed a Super Bowl (which is a crazy phrase) was coming off a Super Bowl loss. But they were also up at halftime at home in the AFC Championship. So yes, it was a rare choke job, but can we put that on the Super Bowl hangover? They'll be good, but how good?

Year Two of Harbaugh in LA. In Year One, he improved by 6 wins, rising to 11-6. They've got a promising rookie RB but also already had an OL injury. 11-6 seems like a likely ballpark for them again.

Bo Nix went to the playoffs as a rookie. Great defense. Feels like the offense caps their ceiling but their defense gives them a good floor. Another 11-6 team?

Pete Carroll is 73 and this is year one for him in Vegas. Going with Geno Smith who Carroll is well-familiar with. Brock Bowers is a star and Ashton Jeanty could make this team must-watch? But that doesn't mean they'll win double digit games.

Look, the Chiefs have won the division 9 years in a row. No guarantee it's 10, but I'm going to keep picking them first until they prove me wrong. Raiders will be frisky and improved but I've still got them last. Chargers could win the division, but with injury luck, I see them flip-flopping with the Broncos who are carried by their defense.

Chiefs, Broncos, Chargers, Raiders.

AFC East

So the Bills have won this division 6 years in a row. Last year I got cute and thought I could see the Bills falling off and I was wrong. They still have Josh Allen and they're going to be good again.

Feels like I can copy and paste from the 2024 Dolphins preview: Speaking of banking everything on an injury-prone QB, the Miami Dolphins. Speed kills and they've got it. A great team in September and October, but once the weather drops, they lose their magic. Should be good for 9 or 10 wins, but it's hard to see why they'd be better than last year.

The Jets have replaced Aaron Rodgers with Justin Fields. I used to own Justin Fields stock and I guess I still do, it's just not worth very much. I'm not sure going to Jets is the way to lift your value.

The Patriots have Vrabel as coach after Jerod Mayo went 4-13. So Drake Maye in a new system after going 3-9 in his rookie year and somehow also the Pro Bowl. Lol. I like Vrabel to give them a spark, but this team is still a ways away.

Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, Jets.

AFC South

Stroud took a step back. The Texans won their division at 10 wins. Seems like a repeat performance is on deck, but gone are the Super Bowl darling predictions.

Duuuvalll??? Everyone wants to believe that Liam Cohen is going to come to the Jags and finally make Lawrence the prince that was promised. Might take more than a year.

Titans rolling with #1 overall Cam Ward. They're still going to be bad, with moments of friskiness.

The Colts QB situation is a mess.

Texans, Jaguars, Titans, Colts

AFC North

The Ravens are the class of the division and as long as we're talking regular season, no reason to doubt them!

The Bengals have kept their offense intact at the cost of their defense. Should make for a lot of exciting 42-44 point games, but more losses than you'd expect by just looking at the offense.

The Steelers are all-in this year and are relying on 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers. I don't have confidence in Rodgers, but the surrounding pieces are good enough to win games.

The Browns are shit.

Ravens, Steelers, Bengals, Browns

AFC Playoff Teams

1 Ravens
2 Bills
3 Chiefs
4 Texans
5 Broncos
6 Steelers
7 Bengals

- - -

NFC North

The 2023 Lions were a normal bounce away from facing the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII. The 2024 Lions got bounced in the first round of the playoffs by a rookie QB. Detroit enters 2025 without Ben Johnson. So if we're not doing trick plays, is biting kneecaps enough?

Speaking of Ben Johnson, he goes to the Bears. Caleb Williams will get better. (He almost has to?) But how quickly?

Last year I was wrestling with doubts over Jordan Love...overrated? They went 11-6, losing in the first round to the Eagles. Which doesn't actually prove either way if Love is great or not. But now they've added Micah Parsons and should be ready to do some damage.

And the Vikings went 14-3 with Sam Darnold but flamed out in the playoffs. So once again they've got an incredible receiver in their prime and are rolling out an unproven QB.

Packers, Lions, Vikings, Bears

NFC East

You've got the Super Bowl Champion Eagles, the ascendant Commanders, a team that refuses to use curtains to prevent their players from being blinded, and the shitty Giants.

Traditionally the Super Bowl hangover is for the loser, and it might be this year also, but also the Eagles are one injury to Hurts or Saquon from being pedestrian. They should be better than Wash, but it wouldn't surprise me if Commanders get to 12 wins and Eagles drop to 11.

Eagles, Commanders, Cowboys, Giants

NFC South

This is a familiar feeling, and I'm never right, but I believe in the Falcons and I doubt the Bucs.

I'm all in on riding Penix.

And the Panthers could get all the way up to don't buy.

Falcons, Bucs, Panthers, Saints

NFC West

This division is super balanced. I was out last year on the 49ers. But this year is the year after the SB hangover. Meanwhile the Rams could put it all together, or could get injured and fall to pieces. Fun!

49ers, Rams, Seahawks, Cardinals

NFC Playoff Teams

1 49ers
2 Packers
3 Eagles
4 Falcons
5 Commanders
6 Lions
7 Bucs

Two years ago I made this prediction and I liked how it turned out. Let's run it back:

2024 NFL Preview

Here's a quick timeline.

I started this blog in 2005.
In January 2016, I saw the Chiefs win a playoff game for the first time.
In January 2020, I saw the Chiefs go to the Super Bowl for the first time.
The Chiefs have been in 4 of the last 5 Super Bowls, winning three.

Before Pat Mahomes became a starter in August 2018, Chiefs were synonymous with playoff failures.
Now they're going for history, a chance to become the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.

Last year I predicted 49ers and Chiefs would meet in Super Bowl 58. And they did. Neat.

AFC West

We start with the two-time defending Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. We're nearing the end of Kelce's run. And what a run it's been. Despite winning two Super Bowls in a row, the Chiefs have been able to keep the roster intact and keep drafting well.

Last year the Chargers had Justin Herbert entering his 4th year. Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler, Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack. This was a team predicted to go 11-6. They went 5-12, finishing last in the division. So they cleaned house. Brought in Michigan Man Jim Harbaugh and shipped out Ekeler and Allen. Their offense is a real Who's That? The question becomes how much of a positive impact can Harbaugh have in one season?

Year Two of Sean Payton coaching the Broncos. Russell Wilson is out, rookie Bo Nix in. Nix! Williams! Sutton! Mims Jr.! Exactly the kind of players you want to take in the 12th round of your fantasy draft. 8-9 last year and now will face the growing pains of having a rookie QB.

Jimmy G, once the most prized backup QB in the league, was the Raiders starter in 2023. He's now returned to the role of backup and the Raiders are instead going with, checks notes, Aidan O’Connell or Gardner Minshew. Haven't seen a QB battle this intense since JaMarcus Russell vs Game Film.

QB Rankings

Mahomes
Herbert
Nix
Minshew

Division Finish
Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, Raiders

AFC East

Last year the Bills and Dolphins both finished 11-6, the Jets went 7-10 with no QB, and the Pats went 4-13.

The Pats drafted their QB of the future Drake Maye, but as well all know, Drake is not like us. He's losing a training camp battle with Jacoby Brissett. Now the Pats are trading away good players. Looks like another 4th place finish.

Last year, the Aaron Rodgers hope train got derailed leaving the station. But now that he's 40 and recovering from an injury, I'm sure things will go better than when he was 39 and healthy. The fact that the Jets still went 7-10 without him shows they've got talent and fight, so they'll be in the hunt as long as their QB stays upright.

Speaking of banking everything on an injury-prone QB, the Miami Dolphins. Speed kills and they've got it. A great team in September and October, but once the weather drops, they lose their magic. Should be good for 9 or 10 wins, but it's hard to see why they'd be better than last year.

And then there's Buffalo. Their window isn't all the way shut, but it's been closing for a little while. Tre White is gone. Diggs is gone. Milano is hurt again. It's the Josh Allen show again but this time without any receivers. Allen is good enough that 11+ wins won't surprise me, but also feels like they're due for a year of 8 or 9 wins.

Three good but not great teams and one dogshit.

I don't like the vibes in Buffalo, I don't believe in Miami in December, and I'm not convinced Rodgers will be healthy all year.

This is so tough. Buffalo seems like a 2nd place team. I was about to put my trust in Rodgers but then I remembered they're the Jets.

QB Rankings

Allen
Tua
Rodgers
Brissett/Maye

Division Finish
Dolphins, Bills, Jets, Pats

AFC South

Stroud stepped on to the scene and surpassed Lawrence as best QB in the division in his rookie year.

Richardson hasn't proven he can stay healthy. Tremendous talent, but I need to see him avoid hits before I take the Colts seriously.

The Texans have re-loaded and should be good. Colts could be good if Richardson stays on the field, and we're still waiting for Lawrence to prove he can be a top5 QB.

Titans are a rag-tag roster, and I like Levis ok, but I can't pick the worst QB in the division to be a division contender.

QB Rankings

Stroud
Lawrence
Richardson
Levis

Division Finish
Texans, Jags, Colts, Titans

AFC North

Is Burrow healthy? Unfortunately for them, this is really the last year of their best Super Bowl window. They'll pay Burrow and Chase which you have to do, but it's going to limit the amount of great players you can start around them.

Is Lamar overrated? I mean, he still sucks in the playoffs. Last year was his sixth year and the first time he's started 16 games. Cool MVP trophies bro.

I'm one of the few people who thinks that Justin Fields is a good QB, and I think the Steelers will be better off the sooner they start him.

And then there's the Browns. Watson sucks. Chubb's leg exploded. They finished 11-6 last year but on the back of Joe Flacco.

All of these teams were good last year, but someone's got to fall off. The class of this division is still Ravens and Bengals. If Burrow was fully healthy, I might pick them to win the division, but I'm not convinced.

QB Rankings

Burrow (if he's healthy but he's not)
Lamar
Fields
Watson

Division Finish
Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns

AFC Playoff Picks

1 Chiefs
2 Texans
3 Ravens
4 Dolphins
5 Jaguars
6 Bills
7 Bengals

NFC North

Now this is a division. The Lions won the division by 3 games last year. They won a playoff game. And they were up 24-7 in the NFC Championship game.
Now the Detroit Lions have real expectations. So of course everything will go off without a hitch!

Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears have done something we've really never seen. They went 7-10 and added the best QB in the draft, and he seems like the real deal. Plus they reloaded with talent around Williams.
I know people compare him to Mahomes a lot already, but Mahomes joined a good Chiefs teams. That might be the most important comparison.

So I might be eating some crow this year. In January 8, I published this list of QB rankings/tiers and I had Jordan Love as the 19th best QB in the league, behind Justin Fields, same tier.
Love got a $220M contract and Fields is now the backup on the Steelers.
So was I way low on Love? Is he a top 10 QB and going to lead the Packers to the playoffs? Should I double down on my Love is mid take or should I course correct and get on the right side of history?

Oooof. The Vikings have an all-time great receiver in his PRIME and they've got Sam Darnold dicking around back there. Easy 4th place here.

Packers/Lions/Bears are all good teams and it will get decided by injuries and how good Williams actually can be this year.

QB Rankings

Love (going out and winning that playoff game showed me I had him too low previously)
Williams (he hasn't earned this yet, but I'm willing to believe)
Goff (he's good!)
Darnold (he's bad!)

Division Finish
Bears, Lions, Packers, Vikings

NFC South

Panthers are dog shit.

Falcons are all in, have a ton of talent, and got rid of their shitty coaches. I took them last year and was fooled. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.

The Bucs are frisky even though I never think they'll be good and the Saints are mid.

Goff is better than all these guys.

QB Rankings
Cousins
Mayfield
Carr
Bryce

Division Finish
Falcons, Bucs, Saints, Panthers

NFC West

In 2019, the 49ers went 13-3 and lost in the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. The following year, they finished last in their division, going 6-10.
In 2023, the 49ers went 12-5 and lost in the Super Bowl to the Chiefs. Let's come back to this.

The Rams don't have Aaron Donald. But they do have Puka and Cooper.

The Seahawks are just kinda blah.

And the Cardinals should be better with a healthy Kyler, but what's their ceiling.

The 49ers still seem like the best team, but that Super Bowl Loss Hangover is going to bring them back to earth a bit. Feels like these could 4 teams that all finish around 8-9. But I can't put the 49ers winning the division after losing the Super Bowl.

QB Rankings
Purdy
Stafford
Kyler
Geno

Division Finish
Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks

NFC East

The Cowboys are so interesting because they're always good in the regular season and they're always such shit in the playoffs. So let's just lock that in one more time.

The Eagles are the year after the Super Bowl Hangover. My Hurts stock looks great but is still undervalued by the rest of the world.

Commanders will have a spark but the obvious growing pains of a rookie qb.

And the Giants will be shit. In contention for worst team in the league!

QB Rankings
Hurts
Dak
Daniels
Dimes

Division Finish
Eagles, Cowboys, Commanders, Giants

NFC Playoff Picks

1 Eagles
2 Bears
3 Falcons
4 Rams
5 Lions
6 Cowboys
7 Packers

Yep, I've got the 49ers missing the playoffs. I think the Bears/Lions/Packers are all playoff teams. Seeing this made me rethink if I should have the 49ers winning their division, but what the hell, let's go for it.

I was this close to saying Chiefs over Bears, but let's not get nuts.

2023 NFL Preview

The only NFL preview that has nailed the Super Bowl winner twice in the last four years!*

AFC West

We start with the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.

(Pause for 10 minutes to bask in the glory of that sentence.)

I'm back. Mahomes, Kelce and Reid. We're still in Phase 1 of Mahomes' career. One day Kelce won't be here anymore and Reid should retire before Mahomes too. In 2033, Mahomes will be making a playoff run as a 37-year-old quarterback with literally zero players from today's team. And that's fine. But for now, he's got Reid and Kelce and life is good.

It was January of 2023 the last time we saw the Chargers play football. They were up 27-0 in the playoffs and lost.

Russ Wilson will be better this year because he has to be. He couldn't be any worse than dogshit, which is what he was last year. Sean Payton will help.

The Raiders swap Derek Carr for Jimmy G.

It seems too easy, but I think Chiefs win the division, Chargers are a wild-card team, Broncos 3rd and Raiders 4th but it's close.

AFC North

Bengals are still the class of the division, but the Burrow injury makes me nervous. I kinda thought Cinci would fall back to earth last year (saying they were a 10 win team that overachieved in 2021 and predicted them to win 6-9 games. They won 12.) I'll stick with them to win the division and win 11-12 games but if they fall back to earth this year and fail to make the playoffs, I'll still count that as being correct for not believing in them as a concept.

Steelers are on the rise. I think Kenny Pickett outperforms expectations and Steelers make the wild-card.

Seems kinda clear that Lamar's MVP season back in 2019 was the outlier. They've won between 8 and 11 games every year for the last three, going 11, 8, 10. Let's pencil them in for 9 wins this year to complete the set.

I'm still skeptical on Watson on the Browns. If he stinks again, it wouldn't surprise anybody.

Bengals, Steelers, Ravens, Browns.

AFC South

All aboard the Trevor Lawrence hype train. If they get blown out 27-0 in the playoffs, this hype train might not leave the station. But they didn't. They've got Lawrence ascending and Ridley is going to bet on himself this year and finish as a top 10 receiver.

Titans have Derrick Henry and D Hop. If this was 4 years ago, this could be really exciting.

Anthony Richardson will produce some highlight reel plays, but also plenty of picks. Colts will still be bad this year.

Same story for the Texans but without a ton of hope on the horizon.

Jags, Titans, Texans, Colts.

AFC East

This is a fun division now.

Rodgers and Dalvin Cook to the Jets. A ton of young talent there already. But they're still the Jets, you know?

The Bills have gone from Super Bowl darling to not even the most hyped in their division.

The Dolphins are fun and if Tua could stay healthy would be a force to be reckoned with.

Which leaves Bill B in charge of the worst team in the division?

Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Pats.

AFC Playoff Picks

1 Chiefs
2 Bills
3 Jags
4 Bengals
5 Jets
6 Chargers
7 Steelers

NFC West

Cardinals suck.

49ers have a great team and are rolling with Brock Purdy.

Seahawks found a way to cook without Russ.

Rams still have memories of the Super Bowl win, that's something.

49ers, Seahawks, Rams, Cardinals.

NFC North

One of my favorite bits on Hoagie Central is that in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 I just didn't mention the Lions at all. Even last year, I picked the Bears to finish last and didn't consider the Lions worth mentioning. Starting in 2019, I predicted the Lions to finish 4th, 4th, 4th, 3rd. They actually finished 4th, 4th, 4th, 2nd. But all that has changed.

Goff is a new man with the OC in Detroit and they've got the Sun God. Just figure out a way to block the gambling sites from the hotel wi-fi and this team could sniff the playoffs.

The Packers finally move on from Rodgers and will still probably be good.

The Bears have Fields. Now they just need to figure out how to win games.

The Vikings are always going to be good not great with this Cousins-Jefferson combo.

This is the closest division in my eyes. All four teams have a path to finishing first or last.

Since I have to guess, I think Bears finish last. If the Lions had less injuries/suspensions I might have them winning the division, but I'll guess 3rd this year, narrowly behind the Vikings. I've got a good feeling about Love. Packers 1st.

NFC South

This is the first year in a looooooong time that Tom Brady is not in the NFL. Wow.

Are any of these teams good?

Saints have Derek Carr, Falcons have Bijan. Panthers and Bucs have???

Let's go Falcons first, Saints second, Panthers third, Bucs last.

NFC East

I'm a huge believer in Super Bowl hangovers. The Eagles were great last year but they had an easy schedule and they've lost a ton of their defense. My Hurts stock has mooned and that's great, but Philly won't be winning 14 games this year.

Let Tony Pollard cook. Last year Cowboys were consensus favorite and I zagged thinking they couldn't win the division two years in a row. Now, I'm assuming Eagles are the favorite, so I'll go back to believing in Dallas.

I just saw the Giants win a playoff game and yet I refuse to believe in Danny Dimes and this team.

Commanders are starting the Sam Howell era. Good luck.

Cowboys first, Eagles, Giants, Commanders.

Still seems like there aren't any good teams in the NFC.

NFC Playoff Picks

1 49ers
2 Packers
3 Cowboys
4 Falcons
5 Eagles
6 Saints
7 Seahawks

Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas:
49ers over Chiefs

*This probably isn't true, but I'm not going to check. Also turns out just picking the Chiefs 4 years in a row once we found out Mahomes is great is a pretty good strategy.

2022 NFL Preview

Let's get to it.

AFC West

The most loaded division in the league is one I know well.
The floor for the Chiefs in the Mahomes era is an overtime loss at home in the AFC Championship. The ceiling is a Super Bowl win.
Meanwhile, Herbert is absolutely the real deal and the Chargers will be right in the mix. The Broncos added Russ Wilson so that will be interesting. And the Raiders have Carr but they've added Davante Adams.
All four teams should be good which means it will be hard for any team to get to 13 wins.

I think it's Chiefs-Chargers-Raiders-Broncos, but it will be very close, every team between 8 and 12 wins.

AFC North

Easiest thing on the board to predict is Super Bowl Hangover. Sorry Bengals. They were a 10-7 team that overachieved. 9-8 feels right for them.
The Steelers don't have a QB. And the Browns won't have one until week 13.
Ravens winning this division seems like easy money.

I like Ravens as only playoff team from this division. Bengals, Steelers and Browns should all be mediocre, between 6-9 wins.

AFC South

An interesting but flawed division. Titans have Tannehill and Henry but no AJ Brown. The Colts have had a good GM and roster but no quarterback since Luck left. Enter 37-year old Matt Ryan. Texans are rebuilding and Jaguars will be better but probably just frisky, not good yet.
I think it's Colts-Titans-Jaguars-Texans. Though Davis Mills showed promise. So I wouldn't be completely shocked if they show signs of life.

AFC East

Bills are great. Patriots are good. Dolphins have life and a Cheetah. And the Jets suck.
Bills-Pats-Dolphins-Jets.

AFC Playoff Picks

1 Bills
2 Ravens
3 Chiefs
4 Colts
5 Chargers
6 Pats
7 Raiders

NFC West

Rams are defending champs. 49ers are starting the Trey Lance era. Seahawks are starting over without Russ. And Cardinals have a QB that needs a homework clause and Hopkins is missing 6 games.
Rams narrowly ahead of 49ers, narrowly ahead of Cardinals. Seahawks last.

NFC North

Packers still have Rodgers but don't have Adams.
Bears are early on in their rebuild phase with Fields
And Vikings have a lot of talent but do you pick a team with Cousins ahead of a team with Rodgers?
Bears will finish in last place. I'll pick Vikings narrowly ahead of Packers, but both to make the playoffs.

NFC South

Falcons are starting the post-Matt Ryan era with Mariota. Panthers are having a qb competition between Baker and Darnold. I think the lasik-Winston Saints could be interesting. And then there's a 45-year-old QB in Tampa.
Tampa's probably better than the Saints, but at some point Brady has to show signs of being human, no?
Fine. Bucs, Saints at the top, Falcons and Panthers at the bottom.

NFC East

Danny Dimes.
Wentz.
Hurts.
Dak.

Seems too easy to stay it'll be a repeat of last year, but that's still what I think. Dak is better than Hurts, but do we really trust the Cowboys to win the division twice in a row.

So let's say Eagles just ahead of Cowboys, Commanders and Giants in the distance.

NFC Playoff Picks

1 Bucs
2 Rams
3 Vikings
4 Eagles
5 Packers
6 Saints
7 49ers

Super Bowl LVII in Arizona:

2021 NFL Preview

Year two of NFL in a pandemic. Neat. The Chiefs have been to back to back Super Bowls. Cool.

Oh yeah, and now we've got 18 weeks (17 games) and 7 playoff teams in each conference. Let's do this.

- - -

AFC West

The Chiefs set a franchise record for wins last year and addressed their biggest weakness (O-line) in the offseason. The only thing that can get in their way is a Super Bowl hangover. Meanwhile, the Broncos have already given up on starting Drew Lock and are going with Teddy Bridgewater. Herbert is legit so I like the Chargers to finish 2nd. I expect the Raiders to be about 8-9, Broncos maybe 6-11.

AFC North

I was pretty spot on last year, but the Steelers and Browns were both better than I thought they'd be. I think the Bengals have a stranglehold on 4th place and will for a while. Ravens, Steelers and Browns should all be good around that 10-11 win area. I know Big Ben is old but the Steelers defense is good. Let's go Steelers 1st, Browns 2nd, and Ravens 3rd. But Baltimore still has a ton of potential to be a top AFC contender.

AFC East

Bills and Pats will compete for the division with Miami lurking right behind with Tua. Jets finishing in 4th place is a lock. I would bet on the Pats coming back and winning the division once again.

AFC South

The Colts are relying on Carson Wentz and he's already hurt. The Jags stink and the Texans are a mess. What a yikes division. Titans 1st, Colts 2nd, Jags 3rd, Texans 4th. (Without Watson, Texans are my pick to finish last.)

- - -

NFC West

Seattle has been good for a while, should still be good.
The Cardinals are on the rise with Murray.
The Rams upgraded at QB with Stafford
And the 49ers are only a year removed from the Super Bowl, but they might be the weakest team in the division now?

This is the opposite of the AFC South.

49ers 4th.
Cardinals 3rd but good.
Seahawks 2nd but a playoff team.
Rams 1st. I have a feeling that Stafford is going to thrive now that he's out of Detroit and there's going to be a million jokes of "how could the Lions not win playoff games with this guy?"

NFC North

I nailed this division last year. I still think Packers come in 1st. Bears and Vikings should both be solid as well. Packers 1st, Vikings 2nd, Bears 3rd.

NFC East

This division was garbage last year.
Washington is starting Fitzmagic. Philly has Hurts. Dallas has Dak. Giants have Daniel Jones who is 8-18 in his career so far.
I like Dallas 1st, Philly 2nd. Washington 3rd and Giants 4th.

NFC South

Defending Champs Bucs. Saints with Winston. Panthers brought in Darnold. Falcons...who knows what to think there. Let's go Bucs 1st, Saints, Falcons, Panthers last.

AFC Playoff Picks

1 Chiefs
2 Pats
3 Steelers
4 Titans

2020 NFL Preview

It's Labor Day Weekend so a totally normal NFL season must be around the corner. What's that? There was no preseason? Some teams are going to have no fans and some are barely going to have any? And that's unrelated to the LA Chargers? And the Kansas City Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl Champions?

Not sure which is the craziest part.

- - -

AFC West

It's tough to repeat as Super Bowl winners but KC only got stronger and would be a big disappointment if they didn't win the division. It doesn't seem like Herbert is going to start for the Chargers, so while they have talent, I'm picking the Broncos to finish 2nd here. Raiders will have their moments and while they make sense as a last place team, I'm going to go out on a limb to pick Chargers to fall to last. They'll be good once Herbert is good, but that's not this year.

AFC North

The Ravens will be out for blood after being the #1 team in the AFC and being one and done in the playoffs. Burrow will lift the Bengals but not enough. I think Big Ben is too old and the Browns will be mediocre too. Ravens 1st, Steelers 2nd, Browns 3rd, Bengals 4th.

AFC East

Brady is gone and so is half their defense. This is the Bills year, right? I mean, sure I'll pick them 1st, but with Patriots close behind. Dolphins 3rd, Jets last.

AFC South

The Titans made it to the AFC Championship game but I think the Texans put it together this year. Jags last. Titans 3rd. Colts 2nd. Texans 1st.

NFC West

Seattle reminded me that they're going to be good as long as they have Wilson. 49ers hangover will be tough. Rams were good, can they bounce back? Cardinal still probably some years away. Seahawks 1st, Rams 2nd, 49ers 3rd, Cardinals 4th.

NFC North

Seems like I never get this division right. Every time I don't pick the Packers, they win the division. Every time I do, they falter. Whatever. Packers, Vikings and Bears should all be in contention at some point. I'll trust the Bears to get it together. Packers 1st, Bears 2nd, Vikings 3rd.

NFC East

I still think Washington and Giants are far away. This year, I'll trust Dak and the Cowboys to make Jerry pay over the Eagles and injury prone Wentz. Cowboys 1st, Eagles 2nd, Giants 3rd, Wash 4th.

NFC South

The Saints have one more ride in them. The Bucs will be spicy, but not enough. Brady is old and he's not in the AFC East anymore. Saints 1st, Bucs 2nd, Falcons 3rd, Panthers 4th.

AFC Playoff Predictions

1 Chiefs
2 Ravens
3 Texans
4 Bills
5 Patriots
6 Colts

NFC Playoff Predictions

2019 NFL Preview

I did this last year and it was fun so I'm doing it again. Let's go ahead and get the Chiefs out of the way first.

(I wrote this last week before Luck's retirement. I will leave what I had intact and add edits.)

AFC West

The Chiefs have won the division 3 years running. Last year, Mahomes was the MVP of the league in his first year starting. This is a Super Bowl caliber team. But if I was a Chargers fan and this blog was called Fish Taco Central, what would be the argument for LA? Well, the Chargers and Chiefs had the same record last year and beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead. The Chiefs have turnover on the defensive side, while the Chargers...I just can't do it anymore. The Chargers have the worst injury luck in the league and it's already started with Derwin James this year. Melvin Gordon is holding out. They don't have a home field advantage. They printed shirts for beating the Chiefs and they are 1-9 against KC over the last five years. Writers are assuming regression for Mahomes but I think the Chargers are a more likely regression candidate. They've got 9-7 written all over them. The Broncos will be a competitive 6-10 or 7-9 and the Raiders will fade out of Oakland in last place. Earlier this year I thought that a team can't suck so bad with a star like Antonio Brown...and this whole offseason is showing me that Brown and the Raiders are a match made in heaven. This has to be the easiest division in football to predict the order of finish. Chiefs have a tough schedule and might go 11-5 or 12-4 again, but I see them winning the division for the 4th straight time.

Division Winner: Chiefs

AFC East

Let's jump over to the Super Bowl Champs. This division is kind of the same story as last year right? Patriots are just miles ahead of the other teams. Everyone thinks the Dolphins are the worst team in football. I'm not convinced in Darnold/Bell/Gase but they should be better than last year's 4-12 finish. So the Bills are the only hope to end the Pats' AFC East reign. They should be decent, in contention for a wild-card spot. Allen's improvement plus a good defense feels like 9-7 might be in the cards. But the Pats win again. Now one of these years, Brady has to feel the effects of his age. I know I sound like cloud yelling at old man, but it's happened to Manning and Favre and every other player in the history of sports so I don't really see why it will never happen to him. Besides TB12, of course. Like, it's not unreasonable to think that he could get injured this year. But anyways, even without Gronk they'll still win the division and probably get home-field too.

Division Winner: Patriots

AFC South

I've said it ten times by now, but I think Watson vs Mahomes is the next Brady vs Manning. But the Texans don't instill a lot of confidence with their coaching and offensive line. The Jags are about to learn that Nick Foles magic only works when you put him in late in the season, not start the season with him. Seems like this is the last year of Mariota for the Titans. Meanwhile, the Colts are building an awesome team and have Andrew Luck healthy...what's that...Luck is hurt again and may not be ready for week one. Just when it seems clear to pick the Colts to win the division, you don't know what to make of Luck's health. Well, there were injury concerns heading into last year and he was fine so I'm going to assume the same for this year. I'm holding onto all of my Deshaun Watson stock and so I think the Texans are a wild-card team.

Division Winner: Colts

Post-Luck-Retirement Update: Well, shit. Without Luck, it's really hard to pick the Colts here. But I didn't trust the Texans 100%. So is there a chance for Titans to rise up and surprise? Or will the Colts luck into their next great QB? What the hell, I'll trust the Colts system and roster and keep this as-is.

AFC North

The Bengals suck. So you've got the confident, new look Browns with Mayfield to Beckham...the run-first Ravens with Lamar Jackson trying to scramble on every play...and the Steelers without Bell and Brown, but they still have old Big Ben. The Steelers are still well coached and Juju is a fine #1. These three teams could finish in any order and it wouldn't surprise me. I'll guess Ravens 10-6 and Steelers and Browns both 9-7, but I'm not remotely confident in that. The Bengals suck.

Division Winner: Ravens

NFC West

The Rams still seem to be the class of the division...except I'm not 100% sold on Goff and I'm wary of a Super Bowl hangover. The Seahawks will be good but not great. And the Cardinals have a new coach and a new QB. There will be flashes, but seems like a 4 or 5 win team. That leaves us with the 49ers. Last year Garoppolo got hurt in Week 3. So we don't really know what he's capable of yet. I'm thinking Cardinals finish 4th and 49ers 3rd. The Rams seem to have too much talent to not win, despite a potential hangover.

Division Winner: Rams

NFC East

So let's see the Giants sucked last year, lost Beckham, and are still starting Eli in week one before eventually handing over the reigns to a noodle-arm. Why aren't they the worst team in football again? Washington is going with a rookie QB which is the right move but seems like a five win team. So it's really down to the Cowboys or Eagles. Which for me is a question of can Wentz stay healthy for a full year. I don't actually think he can, but I'm still picking the Eagles. He's gotta play most of the games and the Cowboys aren't that good (especially with all the contract stuff) to win back to back division titles.

Division Winner: Eagles

NFC South

The Saints have been a Super Bowl caliber team two years in a row and came up short of the game. They still seem like the cream of the crop. None of the other teams had winning records last year, but someone will rise up to contend. The Panthers have a history of being flip-floppy so it wouldn't surprise me if they get back to their 2017 11-win total, while the Falcons still haven't recovered from 28-3. So I'm going Saints, Panthers, Falcons, Bucs.

Division Winner: Saints

NFC North

My perception of a team is always dominated by the quarterback. So every year that the Packers have been mediocre, I'm always shocked. Turns out there's more to a team than a QB. Three teams have a decent chance to fight for the division. The Bears were great last year but apparently are still haunted by the double doink. I don't believe in Cousins but I do believe in Thielen. I'm always tempted to pick the Packers but that hasn't worked out for me lately. And the Vikings are great at shitting the bed. So I guess I'm going to trust in the Bears defense and assume that Coach Nagy really isn't going to let one missed field goal destroy his entire 2019 season even though that's exactly what I actually think is going to happen.

Division Winner: Bears

2018 NFL Preview

Two years ago, I identified storylines for all 32 teams. Pretty interesting to go back and read them--many still apply, many seem laughably outdated. This post was actually inspired by, of all things, the AFC South. So I'll start there.

AFC South

Andrew Luck is back! Or at least Andrew Luck is back. Andrew Luck is back? We'll see. After an off-season of reports that had him not permitted to throw a regulation size ball, all eyes are on him. He seemed destined to be the new Manning or Rodgers at one point, but now it's unclear who he is. If he is that type of ELITE QB, then we should be seeing it on the field. Likewise for the Texans, Deshaun Watson is back. Last year he was the most electrifying player and story and it seemed like the Texans were headed for playoff success. An injury derailed that and now we're waiting to see if he can recapture that glory. The Titans ended up winning a playoff game (can't remember how that happened) and then immediately fired their Head Coach. Teams don't usually fire their head coach after winning their first playoff game in 14 years. But hey, their new coach Vrabel is running wind sprints so they should be in good hands. Mariota has a little bit of the Luck thing too...if he's great, shouldn't we be seeing it by now? And then there's the Jaguars. They were a play or two away from the Super Bowl. Last year they had the defense, Fournette and Bortles came through in the clutch. Was it a fluke? (I think so.) I bet the defense regresses, Bortles struggles, and Fournette is still awesome—he can carry the ball but can't carry a team.

Division Winner Prediction: Texans

AFC West

The Patrick Mahomes era is upon us. On paper, it's the best offense since the 2011 Eagles Dream Team. The potential for the offense is seriously high and this is assuming that Mahomes is the savior we think he is. There will be struggles and the question is will the highs overcome the lows? Also, the defense will be likely bad, possibly terrible. I'm saying take the over every Chiefs game. The Chargers are getting hyped up like they are every year but they lose more players to injury than any other. Something in the ocean? They could win the division at 9-7 but I wouldn't bet on it. Denver seems lost. Case Keenum will need a whole lot of Mile High Miracles to save this team. And the Raiders? Their Vegas stadium is set to open in 2020, so this probably isn't their last Oakland season, but you never know. Maybe they'll play 2019 in Reno. They got Gruden coaching who will likely be out of touch. None of these teams figure to be that great, so I'll stick with the winner the last two years.

Division Winner Prediction: Chiefs

AFC North

The Browns have been grabbing players and they've entrusted Baker Mayfield to be the quarterback of the future. They'll be bad again this year, but one day, they might possibly eke out a winning record in our lifetimes...maybe. The Bengals and Ravens are both boring. They occasionally put a good year together but otherwise just kinda lay there. I trust the Ravens to surprise more than the Bengals. But this division still belongs to the Steelers. This is their last year with Bell and it shouldn't be too hard to win this division again.

Division Winner Prediction: Steelers

AFC East

As long as the Pats have Brady, they're a lock to win the division. How much more does he have in the tank? The Jets have their QBotF in Sam Darnold, the Bills have Josh Allen and the Dolphins are returning Tannehill. If the Pats were in a better division this would be interesting...but it's not.

Division Winner Prediction: Patriots

NFC South

On the receiving end of the Minnesota Miracle is the Saints. Brees is still great, Kamara is great, they still have a top coach. The Saints were as close as you can get to the NFC Championship and still have a few more years of Brees. Time to make the most of it. The Falcons are solid and trying to return to their 2016 highs. A lot of the same players could make this interesting. Neither the Bucs nor Winston are good. In a weaker division they might have a chance, but this is a tough hill to climb. Did you remember that the Panthers won 11 games last year? I didn't. Seems like this will be a dogfight between the Saints and the Falcons and we now know the Falcons stance on dogfighting.

Division Winner Prediction: Saints

NFC West

Goff, Gurley, Cooks, Donald, Suh, Peters, Talib, McVay. If you can build teams on paper, the Rams have already won the Super Bowl. Should be the most interesting team to watch and see if the talent coalesces or blows up. Also in the division: Jimmy G. The biggest investment questionmark ever. Is he the next Tom Brady? This is our first chance to see for real. The Seahawks used to be good, but now they don't have a Legion of Boom. Can Pete Carrol form a new identity. And the Cardinals will valiantly claim fourth place with Bradford and Rosen. Desert football! Fitzgerald is still playing, that's something. Really should have won that Super Bowl with Warner, would have been nice. As for who wins this, do you trust a dream team or a the dreamy QB? I'll go with the team in the division, not necessarily in the playoffs.

Division Winner Prediction: Rams

NFC East

Philly Philly won the Super Bowl with Foles and Wentz is better so when they get Wentz back they'll win 2 Super Bowls. Right? Isn't that how this works? The Eagles were special and should be good again, but it's hard to repeat. The Giants are putting all their money on Odell, their top pick on Barkley, and trusting Manning for one last ride. Seems like they could maybe get to 9 or 10 but will likely be mediocre. (Barkley is awesome though.) Washington went from Cousins to Smith in the most lateral move possible. And the Cowboys have moved on from Dez Bryant who used to be a top 10 receiver and is now in street clothes. It wouldn't surprise me if any of these teams come in 1st or 4th in the division. Because of the hangover effect, I'm giving a slight nod to Dallas over Philly.

Division Winner Prediction: Cowboys

NFC North

During the entire Rodgers-Brady era, I thought the safest preseason Super Bowl pick was always Packers-Patriots. The Packers have gone to exactly 1 Super Bowl since drafting Aaron Rodgers in 2005. If your team had Rodgers, I think you'd expect more. Trubisky & Nagy sound like Chicago cops. I wasn't super impressed with their strategy of not letting Trubisky throw the ball last year but what do I know. The Lions have brought in Matt Patricia from the Belichick coaching tree. Unfortunately, it seems like that coaching tree doesn't bear fruit. And then there's the Vikings who had 3 quarterbacks which really meant they had 0, so they went all in on Cousins for a fully guaranteed contract. The good news for them is career-ending injuries on their practice turf are virtually unheard of. Bears last. Lions third. Vikings and Packers down to the wire. Because I'm an idiot who never learns I will stick with Green Bay.

Division Winner Prediction: Packers

32 NFL Storylines

For some reason, I'm even more excited about the NFL this year. Maybe it's because the Chiefs should be a playoff team, I don't know. Just looking across the league, it seems like there's something to watch for with every team. I thought I would go team by team with my thoughts.

AFC

Patriots - With Tom Brady and good coaching, this team is always going to be a Super Bowl contender. Can they survive four games without Brady?

Bills - Tyrod Taylor, McCoy, Watkins...could the Bills actually be exciting? They were 8-8 last year, is this a wild card team?

Dolphins - Will Tannehill continue to be mediocre or will ever break out?

Jets - This seems like a clusterfuck. Will they look competent at all?

Bengals - They were good last year but stumbled in the playoffs. Are they actually good or was last year a fluke?

Steelers - They've been under the radar for a little while, but seem capable of manufacturing a deep playoff run. Will they?

Ravens - Even more under the radar, but also have a history of bouncing back. Could they surprise people?

Browns - They're building something slowly. I doubt it, but could RG3 return to former success? What about Gordon?

Texans - Will Osweiler actually be good and give this team the thing they were missing?

Colts - Andrew Luck has got to turn into a top tier quarterback, right...is this the year it comes together?

Jaguars - They're still a couple years away right?

Titans - Is Mariota a bust or a rising star?

Broncos - The returning Champs turn to an inexperienced quarterback. If he's terrible, how long before the defense loses faith?

Chiefs - Poised to take the division...can they execute? Can they get a playoff bye?

Raiders - With Carr, they're going to be good some day. Will they contend this year?

Chargers - How many great years does Rivers have in him?

NFC

Cowboys - Is Dak the future? How good can Dak, Dez and Zeke be this year?

Giants - Manning to Beckham. That seems fun.

Eagles - Seems like a rebuild is underway.

Washington - Another year of Kirk Cousins, will we like that?

Vikings - What could have been an up and coming team looks like a lost season.

Packers - Every year with Aaron Rodgers, they can be a Super Bowl contender. Yet he only has 1 SB appearance. Will he get back there?

Bears - How good is Langford? Still, yikes.

Lions - Never won a playoff game with Megatron. How good can they be without him?

Saints - Will Brees win the passing crown on a losing team again?

Bucs - Is Winston going to turn into a Pro Bowl QB?

Falcons - How much longer can Julio Jones be a dominant WR?

Panthers - Can they return to the Super Bowl?

Seahawks - Can they return to the Super Bowl?

Cardinals - They went 13-3, but Palmer and Fitz are getting old. Do they have one more playoff run in them?

49ers - They're bad, right?

Rams - How good is Gurley? What's it like to finally have a team back in LA?
