Burger Bet in the Mahomes era

There's odds for the 2020 Super Bowl already.

Chiefs are a top 3 team. Lions are a bottom 5 team. A burger bet between the two records seems kind of unnecessary. So we're adding a wrinkle.

Until further notice, the burger bet is now regular season record + record against the spread.

It wouldn't have made a difference this year, because the Chiefs and Lions were both about the same, although the Lions were better ATS than the Chiefs.

However, in this system the Browns ended better than the Eagles, despite finishing 2 games behind in the standings. This system is designed to punish favorites and reward underdogs that have a surprising season, so it should at least give the Lions a better shot. (I'll even make the caveat that if the Lions have the better record than the Chiefs, than the ATS stuff is unnecessary--I'll honor that victory.)

This one is deceiving. Mark's bun is really two grilled cheese sandwiches. I had a bite and it was actually pretty good.

funniest sounding finals matchups

Since it's the NBA playoffs, I dusted off nba2k9 for ps3. And with updated rosters I've taken the new look Nuggets to the finals where they face Miami. Or in other words the matchup is Heat Nuggets. By sport here are the funniest sounding matchups that are possible, based on conferences.

NBA
Magic Nuggets
Heat Nuggets
Thunder Bucks
Jazz Wizards

NHL
Wild Panthers
Wild Penguins
Wild Senators
Lightning Sharks
Lightning Avalanche

NFL
Browns Lions*

*not funny because of the syntax, but because the thought of these teams meeting in the Super Bowl is so laughable.

Chiefs Clinch Burger Bet

That's 3 in a row for me/Chiefs. I love this bet because I don't have to do anything. I don't have to make a big board, I don't have to be good at anything. And betting against the Lions is free money. Or in this case, burgers.

So now Mark owes me 2 burgers, and owe him a BBQ meal.

The funny thing about the Lions, is that their record shouldn't be that bad:

This chart is sorted by net points, the far right column. Their output has been better than the first-place Jaguars and Seahawks. And they're on pace for a top 5 pick. Classic.

the most coveted prize in all of sports

The 2009 Burger Bet goes to the Kansas City Chiefs. By losing their fifth game in a row, they clinched the burger for me. That is pathetic.

I say it's clinched because the Chiefs are 68 points ahead in the net points tie breaker. A realistic way for the Lions to take back the crown would be to beat the Bears by a field goal, and have the Broncos win over the Chiefs 66-0.

As pathetic as it is, the burger bet kept me invested in this season, long after their playoff chances were eliminated. And to have it go down to week 16 is pretty impressive. If the Lions could have won today, that would have put a huge amount of pressure on next week's games.

And now the only question is which burger to choose? Do I go with the $19 Rockit burger that might be my favorite one that I've already had, or do I pick a new one from the list, Kuma's Corner, Capitol Grille, or say Hot Chocolate in Wicker Park?

One of the best questions I will ever face.

all over but the eating

The last time I said someone had a stranglehold on something, they didn't get it. But the 2009 Chiefs have a stranglehold on a big fucking burger for me!

With three games to go, the Chiefs are one game ahead in the standings and 60 net points ahead in the tie breaker. Which means the Lions have to outwin (that's not a word, but you know what I mean) the Chiefs by 2 over the last three weeks.

Remaining Schedules:

KC vs Browns
KC @ Bengals
KC vs Broncos

DET vs Cardinals
DET @ 49ers
DET vs Bears

A KC win over Cleveland and a Detroit loss to Arizona would clinch the meat for me. But even if the Chiefs don't win another game...can the Lions win 2 out of 3? They can't beat Arizona unless their QB throws 7 picks and they can't win on the road.

I'm glad we don't have a minimum competenecy clause to claim the burger. The Chiefs are terrible. The lost to the Bills at home. If they can't beat the Browns next week at home, they might as well get demoted to the AAFL.

And yet...they're STILL better than the Lions!

friday nfl column

Between the loyal readers and writer of this site, we root for the Bears, Lions, and Chiefs. After losing to the 49ers, Chicago now has a losing record of 4-5. Certainly that is a better record than the 1-7 of Detroit and Kansas City. Or is it?

And no, I'm not talking about draft picks. I've long since wised up about rooting for losing for draft picks in the NFL. (In the NBA, even with the lottery it makes sense, because of the salary structure and the impact that a James or Howard can provide. But it in the NFL, where you take on such a huge salary for a player with no guarantee of success, top picks are arguably a detriment.)

No, I'm wondering if rooting for the 4-5 2009 Bears is worse than rooting for than 1-7 Kansas City Chiefs?

The only argument is pretty simple: The Chiefs don't get your hopes up. Any meager hopes we did have were lost in week 2, losing to the Raiders at home, due to the absolute worst clock management and stupid penalties and giving up big plays. To the Raiders.

From that point on, I've still been rooting for the Chiefs every week. And sure it stings when they lose, but I know what to expect. When we took the Cowboys to overtime, it hurt. And to come just short in a comeback vs. the Jaguars sucks. But we really didn't have any business winning those games. And when we did win a game, even though we didn't necessarily deserve to win that one either, it felt amazing.

Mostly, I'm not even thinking about trying to make the playoffs. So when we lose, it's not soul crushing. I'm rooting for wins to try and win the Burger Bet, which as important as it is, is only $10 bucks out of my wallet (or $19) and I'll be able to move on easily. (For the record, only the AFC North is as close as the Burger Standings, and since there are only two teams in the Burger Standings it's amazing that it is close. )

On the other hand, if you were rooting for the Bears this year, I don't think you could help but be hopeful. Chicago was 3-1, after beating the Steelers and the Seahawks at Qwest Field. Newly-acquired star quarterback Jay Cutler seemed to be settling in, it was just a matter of time before Forte found his groove, and the playoffs seemed within reach.

But since the bye week, they've gone 1-4 with their only win being an ugly victory over the Browns. They've been blown out by Arizona and Cincinnati, and then last night in a 10-6 loss to the Curse of Crabtrees, Cutler throws 5 picks. With 5 good opponents left on their schedule, a disappointing 7-9 finish seems quite likely.

Meanwhile, in the nation's barbecue capital, if the Chiefs could get wins against the Raiders, the Bills, the Browns, and maybe one against the Broncos, that would put them at 5-11, and a better than expected 4-4 down the stretch.

Hell, even if the Chiefs and Lions both get to 3-13 and the Chiefs win on tiebreaker point differential, I'll be okay with this season. It's not great, but I never allowed myself to get sucked in.

Then again, maybe this is all just sour grapes from a guy who's watching a team with one win.

And on that note, let's get to the Week 10 picks…

In week 8, I picked the Colts, and against the Titans and Rams. While picking against the Rams sounds like a good idea, it's not a sound strategy when that means you're picking the Lions.

I'm still up $30 on the year.

Invested: $200
Currently: $230

Whenever I have a terrible week, I take a week off because I feel stupid. But now that pesky humility has worn off and I'm back for more, $20 on each:

Saints -13.5 over Rams

That's a lot of points in the NFL. Fortunately, St. Louis is more of a CFL team.

Bengals +6.5 over Steelers

I feel like this game is a toss-up. Divisional game, two great teams, should come down to the wire. The only thing I'm afraid of is Pittsburgh breaking a 17-17 tie with a touchdown in the final two minutes to win and cover.

Chiefs +1.5 over Raiders.

Not confident on this one. But in the first game since we cut Larry Johnson, I feel like the karma gods should help us out. Plus, it's the Raiders.

Chargers -2.5 over Eagles

I feel like the Eagles are due for another "we didn't show up" game.

Ravens -10.5 over Browns

I think Cleveland is actually the worst team in the league. They beat Buffalo 6-3 in week 5. I think the Ravens unleash some frustration.

Obviously, this was following the Simmons formula of friday NFL columns. It is not unnoticed that I wrote this for free, and Simmons wrote his for an enormous sum of money. Being perfectly objective, I think this is about the same as an average Sports Guy column. Obnoxiously focused on only the team I care about and stupid personal gambling notes of little interest to anyone else. Of course, mine is 800 words and his is 4500.

Best Burgers in Chicago*

according to Chicago Magazine's 30 Best Burgers

They also have a separate page just to explain why big names, including the $19 burger from Rockit didn't make the list.

I've only had burgers at #14 Hop Haus, #24 Paradise Pup, and #27 Five Guys. Basically all three of them were at one end of the foodie spectrum, opposite where the Rockit burger is.

For what it's worth, the burgers from Epic Burger, Duchamp, Naha, and Kuma's Corner were all on my radar. Also, Capital Grille and Primehouse are literally only a block away, so if I ever wanted to spend $20 on a burger for lunch, I know where to go.

Capital Grille is where I had one of the best meals of my life: a 24-ounce porterhouse for $40. So while I have no doubts about their burger making skills, it almost feels like if you're going to go to Capital Grille and shell out serious cash, why not order a dry-aged steak?

on the burger bet

The burger bet is on the Mt. Rushmore of greatest ideas I've ever had. It's up there with the 9-day week, starting fantasy football and there's room for one more.

Why?

Because the Chiefs are terrible. Even if they were to pull a miracle upset of the Giants this weekend, they're still not going to the playoffs. They could still go 2-14 even with a win this week.

So forget the AFC West. Right now the Chiefs are only 1 game back...in the Burger Standings! Every game counts! If they could pull a win out of their ass and the Lions lose to the Bears, then the Chiefs would be tied for 1st!

Here are the games the Chiefs could win this year: Redskins, Raiders, Broncos (at KC only), Browns, Bills and Bengals. That's 6 "coulds."

With Stafford the Lions might be good enough to beat the Bears or Packers, but if you assume the worst for Detroit, here are their easy pickings: Rams, Browns, Bengals, and possibly the Seahawks, Cardinals and 49ers. Hard to say depending on injuries, how good those teams are yet.

It looks like it will be a tight race until the end. God bless the burger bet.

Time to Celebrate!

Burger Standings
Chiefs 1-6
Lions 0-7

If this is how the Lions celebrate, I'd hate to see how they ignore tradition.

The Falcons, 49ers and Texans were the easy games on the Lions schedule and they've already happened. There isn't a game remaining that you would give the Lions a good chance to win, but I bet the win at least 1.

However, there is a very good chance that the Chiefs win this bet 2 wins to 1.

The Worst Burger Bet in History

Brodie Croyle with a 90% completion rate? And the Chiefs held the Titans to only 123 yards passing? WOW! GO CHIEFS!

Wait, what did you say? The Titans ran for 332. And Croyle is out for the year after injuring himself in both games he's played in this year, and he's yet to win a game in the NFL. Oh. Fuck.
It's time to throw in the towel on Croyle. Maybe he could be a good quarterback if the other team promises not to hit him. The Chiefs are terrible. They must be the worst team in the league.

Oh, what's that you say? The Detroit Lions are offended?

Look at the way they start games:

Week 1: Falcons 21, Lions 0.
Week 2: Packers 21, Lions 0.
Week 3: 49ers 14, Lions 0.
Week 4: Bye.
Week 5: Bears 31, Lions 0.
Week 6: Vikings 2, Lions 0. (Running out of your own endzone.)
Week 7: Texans 21, Lions 0.

That's a combined total of 110-0 in 7 games. Of course in 2 of these games the Lions came back and took the lead. Don't worry, they've lost all 6.

This, my friends, is pitiful.

Standings: Burger Division
Chiefs 1-5
Lions 0-6

The Detroit Lions are a Better Football Team than the Kansas City Chiefs

On August 7, Mark and I made a little wager. The Lions finished 7-9. The Chiefs finished 4-12. I am a man of my word.

- - -

The Lions finished with a net points total of -98; the Chiefs -109. How did Detroit finish .188 above Kansas City, by only having an 11 point advantage? They played smart. They saved up their points for close games, making sure to get blown out by 30 points or more 4 times, not to mention a 21-point loss to Green Bay in week 17 when the game meant nothing to the Packers.

They started off 6-2 and it looked as they would get to their infamous 10 wins. But the second half of the season was not as kind. They would have lost 8 in a row if it wasn’t for their cupcake opponent in week 16.

I’m only at 117 words? Fuck.

Let’s see, the Lions went 1-6 against playoff teams. The Chiefs went 1-5. Hmm. The Lions beat the Bears twice, while the Chiefs couldn’t overcome the power of the Sex Cannon.

The Lions were 9th in passing yards, which I’m sure had nothing to do with the fact that they were 31st in rushing. 32nd, you ask? Why the Kansas City Chiefs, of course!

The also happened to be next to last in both yards and points, so you consider “offense” a weak point on the Chiefs.

The Chiefs employed a risky strategy of neither run blocking nor pass blocking. It didn’t pay off as much as you might have thought it would.

Since I’m not even halfway, here’s a sample transcript of me watching a Chiefs game:

Throw the ball! Throw it!

(interception)

Not to him! Damnit!

(2yd loss on run play on 3rd down)

How come every other fucking team in the fucking league can run the ball for a fucking yard?! Piece of shit team. Come on!

Come on please, miss that kick. Please miss it. Miss it! Miss it!

(opposing team makes field goal)

So that’s how you make a fucking field goal! I wouldn’t know because our piece of shit kicker is shanking 27-yarders! Fuck me!

(crappy running back runs right through the Chiefs defense)

You have GOT to be kidding me! We’re getting run on Cedric Fucking Benson! Oh my god. Oh my God!

Come on. Let the kid play. Let’s see what’s he worth. He deserves a shot. He’s the future of the franchise!

(Croyle gets sacked, fumbles the ball, opposing team runs it in for the touchdown, on the return Croyle tries to make a tackle, gets called for a penalty, and injured himself in the process)

That’s just about right.

For the record, that play actually happened against the Lions, the Chiefs went on to lose by 5. Which just about sums up why the Lions are better than the Chiefs.

46 words left, huh? Well how about this? One of the Chiefs key free agent signings was Eddie Drummond, former kickoff returner for the Detroit Lions. Guess what, he sucked. When trash from the Lions is good enough to make your roster, that’s when you know, this is a “rebuilding” year.

- - -

Well, I got my 500 words. And the photoshop job. So I guess all that's left is for me to buy Mark a burger:

proposed chiefs-lion wager

Well, the Chiefs do play the Lions this year, but it's a home game for Detroit and it's in week 16 when either team could be resting starters (or more likely, trying out prospects for the 08 season). Regardless, I think that overall record is a better indicator of who's having the better season, and the 12/23 game will be used only as a tie breaker.

As for possible stakes, perhaps the fan with the worse team record should have to write 500 words about why the other team is superior, complete with photoshop illustration showing the losing fan rooting for the winning team.

anything else?

Update: And the loser has to buy the winner a burger. Just because.
