Chiefs - Draft Trade 2019

I don't love the trade for Frank Clark.

I'll briefly make the case for it. He's a better player than you can get at #29 with no risk of being a bust. He's also ready to not just contribute now, but be an elite starter this year. The Chiefs are trying to win a Super Bowl this year.

Yesterday I came across a thread that paying an elite quarterback doesn't mean you can't compete. That all it takes it one elite starter on a rookie deal to cancel out the effect of paying the QB. So yes, the Chiefs are trying to win the Super Bowl this year, but they also have a NFL MVP QB for the next 15-ish years. We should be trying to create a large window of winning. And by giving up picks and paying a big contract for Clark, you give up the opportunity to get good players on rookie deals.

If the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the next 3 years and Clark is as advertised, then the deal is worth it.

But I'd prefer to invest in the draft, try to hit on as many rookies as possible.

Once you move past the trade from the GM-team-building point of view, and start looking at the defense from the on-the-field point of view, it's kind of amazing how different this team is. The Chiefs had the best offense and one of the worst defenses and they've completely revamped the D. So from that perspective, you're glad they're making moves and not just standing pat.
