So two years ago just I was getting Untappd underway, I made a list of my top ten beers. But I don't really think of individual beers as much anymore—I tend to think about my favorite breweries.

Don't Mess With A Streak Bobby

So I made a commercial.

And people on the internet are talking about it.

Royals Opening Day

I won a free ticket to the Royals 2017 Home Opener through work. Pretty great day.

Bill Simmons Promoting Cabbage!

This cracked me up (warning:loud at the end). Bill Simmons interrupts his conversation to give a shout out to cabbage!

This would have been a HC post but I figured it would be funnier to post it on Medium cause that's where The Ringer is hosted.

Work Trip to NYC

SUNDAY

I had a 3 day, 4 night trip to NYC to shoot a commercial.

Landed at LaGuardia at 8pm Eastern. Took us 45 minutes to get a freaking cab because the line goes on forever. It took less time to actually travel in the cab to our Manhattan hotel (Kimpton Eventi).

By 9:30 we're checking in and at 10pm we're having dinner at Umami Burger. Dinner at 10 o clock—I'm so cosmopolitan. I started with a maple bacon whiskey cocktail.

I ordered the Manly burger and it was amazing. Would have taken a picture but my phone died. This is what it looks like. Possibly the best burger of my life.

MONDAY

Spent Monday morning checking out the set making sure everything was in place. (Set was a 2.3 million dollar home in Pelham, NY.)

Lunch was back in Manhattan at this korean bbq place (Hee) near our hotel. It was my least favorite meal of the trip. Could have used more meat less other stuff.

After lunch we had a casting session to pick our talent. That was interesting, having gone from over 80 initial auditions to select our 2 actors.

After casting the production company took us out to dinner at Basta Pasta. Their gimmick was mixing a spaghetti with prosciutto in a giant wheel of parmesan at the table. I, being a sucker for gimmicks, ordered it and it was fantastic. Best prosciutto I've ever had.

TUESDAY

Tuesday was my day to explore as we didn't have a production meeting until 4pm.

I started walking north. My hotel was very near the Empire State Building.

I wanted to get an authentic bagel. Everything with scallion at Best Bagel.

Kept walking north. Times Square.

30 Rock.

Atlas.

The last time I saw the Ed Sullivan theater I went inside to see Letterman.

From here I went to Central Park. But it was rainy and the park just seemed kind of boring compared to the city streets.

I knew I wanted to try Shake Shack so I made my way south again. This was great too!

After lunch I went back to the hotel for a little rest. Unbeknownst to me, I'd walked 5.4 miles that morning.

I did some work in the hotel and decided to head out for the afternoon. Another view of Empire State Building.

Flatiron Building.

Ducked into Paragon for some window shopping.

And Converse store was cool.

Had a beer at the Spring Lounge. Then went to our production meeting.

After that we went to the rooftop bar on the Indigo Hotel, Mr. Purple. Good views and good drinks.

After that, we went to a place that I've always wanted to try. Lombardi's, the first pizzeria in America dating back to 1905. (It was fine, but nothing special. You can get the same slice on any street.)

The afternoon trip was another 2.5 miles. By Tuesday night, my left foot was killing me. Still is 48 hours later too.

WEDNESDAY

I woke up Wednesday and both my calves were incredibly sore. Turns out walking 8 miles on Tuesday may not have been the best idea. I could barely walk. Woke up at 6:15 to be on set at 8am.

Here's how much equipment they needed just on one side of the house to get the lighting right inside the house.

The shoot went pretty smooth and we wrapped by 5pm. I bragged about how good Shake Shack was so my friends decided to have dinner there Wed night. After that, had our last drinks in NYC at American Whiskey.

Over three and a half days I had two beers and seven cocktails. Living it up.

2017 Best Picture Prediction

A year ago, I predicted Best Picture. Afterwards I revealed my strategy based upon the Inverse Awesome Theory. The theory goes the more awesome a film is the less likely it is to win Best Picture.

The one thing I know is that Arrival will not win Best Picture. It's a very good film but more than that, it has some awesome moments and an awesome premise. Zero chance it wins.

So that leaves three candidates: Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight and La La Land.

A case could be made for all of them to not be awesome, but first I will rule out Moonlight. Just based on the description, it seems like there might be a little bit of awesome in there.

So now it's down to La La Land or Manchester by the Sea. The first one is a jazz musical with white people. The second includes a house fire.

And the winner of the 2017 Best Picture is La La Land!

Post-Oscars Edit: So that theory looked good for a second there, eh?

So I got this one wrong. In pre-Oscars predictions I am now 1/2 for with this theory.

But, I think the theory actually holds up super great. The problem is that within the Best Picture category there are enough movies without awesome stuff (car chases, guns, aliens) that the theory is not going to be flawless in picking the winner. It is flawless in picking the non-winners. Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival had no chance in my theory--that was borne out.

But this is the biggest thing...the thing that has been nagging at me. If I had really listened to my theory, I wouldn't have picked La La Land.

Because...I have a crush on Ryan Gosling. Specifically, Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love. I know, I know. But when I saw the first trailer that said it was from the same director as Whiplash and had Ryan Gosling, it sounded kind of appealing. Not full on awesome like Mad Max but it seemed like kind of a fun time. And the truth is I picked it because it was such an overwhelming favorite. I went with the chalk because I thought the chalk would be right. But I should have at least listened to my gut and not picked La La Land.

Truthfully, I thought Manchester by the Sea was the least awesome based on the plots and that was my gut guess.

Believable

So when you're writing a piece of fiction you usually want it to be believable. So if you are describing a situation, you want the internal logic to check out. But with a few things in our society, I feel like it doesn't.

You would think that the people against guns and the people against abortion would be the same people. (To be clear, I'm not trying to make the point that one side is bad/good or right/wrong. Just that it would seem to be more believable that there's one side who prioritizes the sanctity of life and another side who prioritizes civil liberties.)

You would think the people most concerned about terrorism (enough to ban refugees) would be the people in big cities who have experienced terrorism or likely to be a target of terrorism.

You would think the people most concerned about terrorism (enough to ban refugees) would be the same people who don't want guns.

You would think that celebrities who have lots of money and fame would be more likely to favor the politicians that give bigger tax cuts to the wealthy and less likely to be social activists.

I'm just saying. Whoever wrote the script for humanity, sometimes it's not very believable.

I got tired of seeing that headline at the top of the page so here's something better to look at.
